as for the price you're paying, that's equivalent to 240 American dollars, i think. so about 20 bucks a month, right? that's cheaper than cable is here, but that's just a tax to keep the BBC in operation, n'est pas? if that's case, you're right about it being unjust.
Oooh...seems like the land of the free has been dealt a nice dose of "media-immunity"..however, PBS and NPR are both publicly supported here in the USA, which means our tax dollars go to underwriting their programming.

I hereby decree that Fox News is the only channel that you dirty brits may watch!!!
Meh...you're opinons are invalidated by your opinions. I generally don't speak to people with poor taste.reminisco wrote:oh, and here in the states, at least among the intellectual elite, BBC's programming (such as those i mentioned purchasing on DVD) seems to rate alongside HBO's programming.
but of course, that's only with the programs that manage to get attention 3,000 miles from where they were produced -- almost certainly distilling out the shitty programs.
also, the public support for NPR and PBS is almost certainly costing each American household less than the 240 bucks it's costing for your support of the BBC. and of course, NPR and PBS subsist quite a bit off of donations, which are, naturally, tax deductible.
you didn't like Tinker Tailor, or House of Cards?Autotoad wrote:Meh...you're opinons are invalidated by your opinions. I generally don't speak to people with poor taste.
I saw on The News Hour a couple of months ago that the amount of public funding NPR and PBS combined receive is equal to about $1 per U.S. American.reminisco wrote:oh, and here in the states, at least among the intellectual elite, BBC's programming (such as those i mentioned purchasing on DVD) seems to rate alongside HBO's programming.

Though, I would say that in general BBC offers much higher quality programming than NPR and PBS.

Just this once.
IJust think...we won't have to put up with that nasal, whining voice of their Scumthorpe correspondant detailing the latest dowturn in the life of poor immigrant Ahmed, or the intricate workings of Upper Baconsbury's local Green Party MP's newest solar panel.Autotoad wrote:I'll be totally honest, I watch about 3 hours of TV per week. Before I left my parents house at age 18, I watched a great deal more TV, and plunged into a different situation where I didn't have nor want a TV. Since then, I had grown "less reliant" upon it for my entertainment. Now, being a libertine and mastermind, I can see through the agenda-pushing and subliminal messages that even the higher bracket of intellectual indivduals would miss, and I find that on the BBC, with every TV programme advertised, every drama scene, every environmental documentary shown, there is a sickening level of politicised garbage being pushed upon the vulnerable of mind.
Global warming!
Terrorism!
Racism!
Teh Capitalists!
Carbon footprint!
Middle east!
Iraq!
China!
George Bush!
Same phucking shit every time.
See, what you must realise, is that the BBC has no competition to deal with, they can spew whatever they like, safe in the comfort that they will get their licence fee's every year, thus not providing the people with what they actually want to see, but rather what the BBC wants to show them. If thwey were a commercial broadcaster, I can gaurentee to you now that a great deal less people would be interested in watching their poor programming, and that they would eventually have to take into account the wants of the public, so as to raise their commercial value.
What grates at me, is that the public are forced to pay for their own impending government message....and that just aint cricket.

I wont lie there are a group of people out there who do consider specieism as legitamate as some of the other isms. Now i suppose there are a lot of things that could be said about that in general, but it is staggering when you consider how many things have to die so the majority of people can eat their typical diet.CoffeeCream wrote:Autotoad wrote:You're sexist against Brits![]()
