london map NEW POLL - CENTRAL LONDON/NORMAL (V4 P1)

Post by t-o-m »

Kemmler and I are continuing the London map that was under construction a while ago,
this is the previous thread:http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... 63&t=44435

I have taken up the graphics side of things while Kemmler is doing the XML.

London Ver 4
image
Direct Link: http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll23 ... rsion4.jpg
------------------------------

In This update:

Ver 4
  • Fixed bonus amounts, hopefully well
  • Re-positioned terit names so they are readable/look better
  • Moved the bridge off the 'S' of territories
  • Changed things around so that Richmond Bridge and the Army circles fit
  • Made the army circles more transparent
  • toned down the brightness
  • re-done the line off the bottom of croydon
  • removed the terit lines from the bonus key
  • added cont name, although theyre not nice to look at - needs fixing
-------------------------------

The size it currently 600px X 600px,

Number of Terits:
25
Number of continents: 5

The River Thames is at the moment the only impassable, with bridges crossing over it to connect:

Richmond - Kingston
Tower Hamlets - Southwark
Greenwich - Newbarn

I am going to make new bridges - as the ones that are in place now are...sh1t lol.

The Airports have been placed, and the poll says that they should connect, so airports connect (link)

Airports:

Hillingdon
Sutton
Havering

Tower Hamlets has been re-named T.H as with the brigde in the terit, and the fact that its a small terit anyway, and the fact that Tower Hamlet is a very long name - well they all make no room for army circles.

Dont worry about copyrighted pictures or anything like that, thats sorted,

Talking Points:

Whether you like the font
Whether you like the font,
Whether you like the glow on the font,
Whether you like the size of the text,
What you want to see in the next update and for me to put on the To-do list,
What we should do with the spare room,
Whether the pictures are faded too much or too little,
Whether gameplay is fair,
Whether you like the graphics,
Whether you like the army circles,
Whther you think there should be more Impassable,

Please feel free to comment on anything about the map, ask questions, or anything else,

  • maybe add more of "england and surrounding areas"
please post a comment and if its good, i'll add it to the to-do list

They're typically called "Airports" not "Aiports", "Territories" not "Teritories", "Impassable" not "Impassible". The graphics look pretty good. To resolve your "squeeze" issue, I suggest you stretch the map out to nearly-fill the 600 px width you're given. It would be nice if the names of the continents were given somewhere on the map.

Good start for this, just to let you know.

sorry for the spelling errors, that'll be fixed ovs. thanks for pointing them out, i did those last things right before i posted this - so sorry..

as for the Continent names, does anyone have any better suggestions then:

(working clockwise starting from top-left)
  • West
  • North
  • North-East
  • South-East
  • South
??
thats all we have atm, and i didnt think that they were good enough to add on

looks good. I would put the airports on all four side of the map in the very back as to give one more spot one would have to protect besides the obvious borders

Airports: Hillingdon, enfield, sutton, bexley or havering but the bridge between them would need to be taken out or just go with three airports and create a shipping line that connects from bewley to richmond. This all assumes that the airports connect, which is what i would go with.

I like the coloration and its easy to follow for sure. One thing, though, with only 25 territories on the whole map, the bonuses seem big. I think +2 and +3 are the way to go here, as the bonus regions are all within very close striking distance of each other.

Oh yeah, on the airports... going with the theme above, every bonus territory is within 3 clicks of any other one that I don't thing either bombarding nor connecting airports would be good. If you have the airports out at the four extremes of the map, then using a "city" style bonus (like in Italy) - I'd think +1 for holding 2 airports, +3 for holding 3, +5 for holding all four - would make for a very interesting game. The set up would need to be coded so that for 1-4 players, nobody starts with 2 airports, and in 5-8 player games, the airports all start neutral.

ahhhh
i knew i missed something off,
i used the bonus calculator - and i rounded them, i am going to hold a poll for the bonuses, the current ones have had no thought, just a formula to work them out,

suggestions will make better bonuses,

i was also thinking of +2s and +3s

Missed the other teritories underneath Bridges.

As for impassables, due to the small size of the map, they're almost unnecessary aside from the River Thames already there. Small bonuses are needed for the small map, though.

The bridges look horrible, and don't clarify connections very well.

And the "Airports bombard/link" is unclear. Does that mean "Airports can bombard each other"? If so, use that instead.

It might be bad that you can hold the bottom of the map with three territories and get a bonus of 8.

the option is that they can either link - which is connect, or they can bombard eachother

Well you've already said you need to redo the bridges, cause right now they suck. Overall,I like the straightforward gameplay, but really if you're going to take on London, one of the greatest cities in the world, then you better deliver. Right now, the map doesn't represent London too well. It's just a plain & simple small map that could be anyplace.

I don't like the huge stroke on the territ names.
The colors are very distinguishable, and I can live with them.
The borders are nice and crisp.
The army circles could be toned down a bit. They are too bright right now - have you read all the hub-bub currently going on about the new classic army circles??!!??

I think I would prefer more of England surrounding the map rather than just images. Now it looks like a floating island.
The bottom of Croydon is chopped off.
The southern border of Enfield is hard to see. Glancing at the map it looks like
Enfield & Haringy are 1 territory.
Are you going to put any textures into the map? Now it looks like like a 5 yr old coloring book page.

Overall, nice start. You two have some skills and I think this map will go far. The proof is in the details.

Very nice and bright to look at, but it hurts my eyes! I think i have gone cross-eyed! But i still like it and the attention to detail is good. If you could tewak down the brightness, i owuld play on it everyday :D

Also some of the brudges look like they are gonna fall over :P

I think I would prefer more of England surrounding the map rather than just images. Now it looks like a floating island.
The bottom of Croydon is chopped off. The stroke is transparent, i can see it
The southern border of Enfield is hard to see. Glancing at the map it looks like
Enfield & Haringy are 1 territory. To-do
Are you going to put any textures into the map? Now it looks like like a 5 yr old coloring book page. I think tom said he would do it but I think it looks good already

RjBeals and Kemmler wrote:I think I would prefer more of England surrounding the map rather than just images. Now it looks like a floating island.
yeh, i wasnt really sure what to put there, and i didnt want to post it blank so i did that,
RjBeals wrote:Are you going to put any textures into the map? Now it looks like like a 5 yr old coloring book page.
i think i will, the colours havnt had much though, after all they can change with a few clicks,
RjBeals wrote:The army circles could be toned down a bit. They are too bright right now - have you read all the hub-bub currently going on about the new classic army circles??!!??
yeah ive seen the army cirlces on new classic - ive seen them, and signed the petition!
i tried downloading the PNG file from i think it was WM, but it had a big black boarder around it so i couldnt use them, anyway thats also changed with a few clicks,
RjBeals wrote:The bottom of Croydon is chopped off.
i have the answer to that:
i was working at 800px X 800px and realised that i was working at that (yes, yes thick i know!) so i changed it to 600px X 600px, but since ive only been using photoshop for less than a week (no tutorials just learning from scratch) i didnt know how to change it altogether and in good quality, so i just copied them layer by layer, so i must have chopped off the bottom line,
RjBeals wrote:the map doesn't represent London too well
i would have put some landmarks or something on the map, however it is only a small map so there was kinda no room for them, so thats why i have pics in the background.
RjBeals wrote:The southern border of Enfield is hard to see. Glancing at the map it looks like

yeah, thats one of the 'talking points', something like positions of text - something like that, the Haringy text was always bothering me, right from when i placed it, but i didnt change it because i was in a rush to post this,
RjBeals wrote:Overall, nice start. You two have some skills and I think this map will go far. The proof is in the details.

sorry t-o-m, i don't like it at all. it does not seem to capture the flavour of that great city.

check out the NYC map for what i think a great city map should be like.
