Map Catagories

Post by Coleman »

Yeah I know, beating a dead horse.

We tried this in the past, it seemed to be going forward, and then it hit a brick wall and fell apart.

I still feel like we need some sort of way to start splitting maps up on game finder and start a game so we don't have the huge intimidating mass of maps we do now. The huge mass confuses new players, and I feel is leading to a loss of new players in a wide variety of ways.

The only solution I can come up with that I don't feel would offend anyone is as follows:
  • 1) We come up with the idea of "Standard Rules" a set of map aspects that don't confuse classic risk players.
    2) We split maps into two groups, Standard and Not. This should inform new players that they will see rules they may not recognize in the Non-standard maps and help alleviate the clutter of maps we have now, if only slightly.

I realize this isn't as grand as what some of us hope will eventually happen, lots of categories and sorts, map ratings and so on. But it seems like a good first step. Looking for feedback and ideas.

Some examples of some "Standard Rules" I think we can agree on:
  • 1) Clearly defined color coded continents with a single clearly defined bonus army reward for holding.
    2) Clearly defined territory borders either by direct touching or through drawn indicators such as a line or arrow.
    3) Grey territories not worth anything. (Yeah, I think this doesn't throw new players or upset purists at all, CCU being an example)

Somebody should dig up that old thread with like 25 pages of category discussions. It was pretty much figured out there.

I don't think it was, people were pretty unhappy with it, and I couldn't get that to go forward.

Coleman. I gotta be honest I like the KISS principle here. 2 categories - standard and non-standard play.
