Down the road from my house is an 'Islamic Bookshop' In amongst some regular shops, a hairdressers, a Pizza hut delivery / takeaway shop, a sunbed shop etc, is the 'Islamic Bookshop'.
Now I live in an East London borough and ethnics abound, and a hell of a lot work for the council.
If it's just a 'bookshop', why is it that children of the same age all leave at the same time, not clutching a book of any description? on a Sunday - it's mobbed. It's obviously not a bookshop, but it's far easier to get a shop and call it a shop, rather than go through the red tape of applying to start a place of worship.
My question to the intelligent English members of this forum - what can I do to complain to my council about this flagrant abuse of non planning application?
you should be able to worship whatever you want, wherever you want. what the hell does it matter to you if they're praying in a bookstore? you thing the government should have the power to tell you where you can and can't worship?

Seriously, good point. It isn't like they are praying in public or anything. They aren't hurting anyone.
If something is zoned as a store and it isn't generating the money that a store would it is hurting the tax payers, aka everyone. I couldn't tell you how to get through to the authorities in London but as suggested, fire is probably a more direct approach.

I agree but even though you are a waste of space I think burning you would be an overeaction.
Pedro I cant really see what the problem is, plenty of people have regular meetings in pubs and community centres also, if they want to pray as well then whats the big deal ? Now if they are doing anything illegal then thats another story but I dont think its against the law to worship unless it causes a public disturbance of some kind.

Hey Pete, I'm with Joe, Suggs and Penguin on this one. If they wish to hold prayer meetings or study classes in their bookshop then I dont see why any 'authority' should interfere or deny them their freedom to do so.
My main gripe is that if I want to do a loft conversion, I have to go through Planning Application and Building Control and have someone on the council agree to my loft conversion. If I convert it myself and don't tell the council, they can make me demolish all the work and return my roof space to original spec.
I'm sure that if the Local Muslims wanted to apply to build a mosque or convert a shop into a place of worship, they would also have to go through planning application.
They evidently haven't and I'm sick and tired of 4-500 people suddenly turning up in my street to pick up or drop off people that need to whip out a prayer mat and point at Mecca for an hour or two. Traffic is a nightmare. On certain days it's like living on Baghdad High Street, with Burqas and beards as far as the eye can see.
If someone else were to buy a shop and turn it into an unlicensed bar - the council would be down on them like a ton of bricks.
I'm sick of the double standards that the London Borough of Waltham Forest uses.
I'm not opposed to the fact that this country operates a freedom of religion policy. I would of like to of been asked if I minded if a local shop being converted into a place of worship, which is what happens during planning application.

I do agree that there are often double standards applied, many authorities are so terrified of being branded racist that they do tend to overcompensate which of course simply reverses the problem. Overall though my take is that the average member of an ethic minority gets a lot more shit than I do so I can live with a little myself, the alternative tends just to play into the hands of the scumbag BNP and the like.

There, I fixed your grammar. Please, do not mutilate the english language like that any more, maybe you pronounce the words 'of' and 'have' identically, but that is no reason to use them interchangeably when writing.

Thank you, I missed that one. Quite sneaky of Juan to hide a spelling mistake by committing a grave grammatical one.

I know. But the Nazis take this so seriously. Look at you now, slowly re-checking this to find the hidden mistake. When people shorten every word, or type in slang, that bothers me a lot. But the other little mistakes I'm cool with.
"Quite sneaky..." I don't know why, but that is funny to me.

do your loft conversion, but always invite a few muslims round every sunday.
the council won't demolish it then, always glad to help.
