Question. Even if this God existed, why worship it? Just because it's "superior" to us does not make it deserving of our fealty. It's not like animals worship us, right? And just because he "created" us doesn't make him worthy of our respect. Hell, parents create people all the time and a good deal of them are fuckups. So why worship this supposed being? Is it because he threatens to torture you otherwise? Surely you don't believe his bull shit "I love you" bit? Oh yes, he loves you...assuming you bend to his will of course. Sounds like a ruthless dictator to me.

The idea that you consider me cattle is slightly annoying. I take comfort in the fact that I'm 99.999999999% positive that you're wrong.

Seriously, the way this question is posed, it doesn't really deserve an answer. But I'll do it anyway, just because I've found a way of putting it that I've been meaning to say for a little bit.

Life is actually worth more if it wasn't created. If you're right, then if we screw up and destroy all life on earth, God could just wink at the ruins, and it'd all be back again. Infinitely expendable. Wheras the reality is, if we screw up, then we've destroyed something very rare and fragile in the universe.

I find I really appreciate this rare and infinitely confusing chance we've found to exist. Even though we haven't figured out exactly how everything came to be, I feel great that we're actually trying. And the fact that it's so very unlikely that we even happened at all (look at all the billions of planets that are nothing but rock) is actually very uplifting when I think about it, and inspires me to try to make the most of my life, and help others make the most of theirs. Walking down the street, looking at the trees around me and the mountains and the sea (I live in quite a picturesque town), I feel very lucky. I think that if it were all just made, by some all-powerful being who is using earth as a proving grounds for our worthiness, that would make everything around me seem much less valuable. I prefer to think of life as something with infinite possible meanings and mystery, than just a manufactured test of character.

Anyway, you know why we should worship this superiour being? Because we're going to burn in misery forever if we don't, regardless of how nice of people we are during life.

I'm an atheist because of the alternative. Christians believe in god because they WANT to believe that some loving god created them who will take them to eternal paradise after they die. Atheists believe because all evidence suggests that God does not exist. btw, being an atheist doesn't mean you believe in the Big Bang theory, it just means you don't believe in religion.

The word in your post that I highlighted is one reason that, if such a being existed, we should worship it.

Besides, if we're assuming that such a being would take on the exact form, history, and behavior that Christians believe it would, then it's probably worthy of our worship, being all-loving and Good (ignoring most of the old testament...and the Hell bit).

But luckily, most tangible evidence points to there not being such a thing. Why is this good? (besides the fact of Hell. I try to be the best person I can, and I think most Christians believe that nonbelievers, if basically good people, can stay out of hell.)

Reading his original post in that light, it's pretty obvious that he wasn't actually making any point at all, but just trying to say things that he thought would bug atheists.

Atheists just oppose the belief that a delusion, when shared by a large enough number of people, becomes a truth.
....but why do you cling to this opinion when the exact same can be said about disbelief?

Nope, disbelief is based on a total lack of evidence that point toward God's existence and on the fact that smart people don't waste their time and energy believing in things just because they can't conclusively prove the opposite. Otherwise we would have to believe that Satan invented bread, that after death we go back in time and reincarnate as as little prehistoric rodents and that the world is going to end next Friday when Giant Pink Space Mouse will come and start nibbling on Earth.
