Tournament Idea - Feedback requested

Post by Noslen »

I'd like to have a crack at organising a tournament. I recently ran one on a different site and would like to try one here. So I have two idea for tournaments and would like some feedback. Both ideas are quite different from each other...one is simple and the other is complex.

---IDEA 1-----------------------------------------------------
The first idea is like a newbie tournament, so it would only be for those who have played less than 75 games or have fewer than 1000 points. It would be a basic knock out pattern. There would be 32 competitors (maybe more depending on interest) meaning 32 games in 5 rounds:

1st Round - 16 games, 32 players - Doodle Earth Map
2nd Round - 8 games, 16 players - Doodle Earth Map
Quarter final - 4 games, 8 players - World Map
Semi final - 2 games, 4 players - World Map
Final & 3rd place match - 2 games, 4 players - 8 Thoughts map

--IDEA 2------------------------------------------------------

The second idea is kinda complex so you'll have to bear with me. It's called the guantlet. The tournament would require 30 players over 15 games. This is the catch however, the idea is based on the players getting through a gauntlet of ever increasing strength players. So the ranks will be broken down into 5 'levels'.

5 'Level 1' players will fight it out in game 1
5 'level 2' players will fight in game 2

The winners of those games 1+2 will play in game 3
5 'level 3' players will fight it out in game 4
The losers of game 2+3 will play in match 1

The winners of games 3+4 will fight in game 5
5 'level 4' players will fight in game 6
Losers of game 3+4 and winner of match 1 will fight in match 2

The winners games 5+6 will fight in game 7
5 'level 5' players will fight in game 8
Losers of game 5+6 and winner of match 2 will fight in match 3

The winner of games 7+8 will fight in game 9
Loser of game 7+8 and winner of match 3 will fight in match 4

Winner of match 4 and game 9 will fight in game 10

In all this makes 14 games with EVERYBODY playing at least two games and EVERYBODY having a second chance to win. The further you go the harder your opponents (at least in theory). I have a basic idea of how to split the ranks/scores to create the 'levels', but I won't bore you with that just yet.

Best advice that I can give - if you have time to commit and you wish to try something great + you are ready to go with your tournament(s) until then end - then go for it! :D

Looking how organised your idea post is then I'm sure that you won't have problems making a good tournament thread and attracting people with it :) I'd also advise you not to make too big and too difficult. Your first idea - something similar is made before so maybe try the second tourney? Though, there are no limits to similar tournaments so give a shot with whatever you feel more comfortable. Just prepare everything before starting so you would have as few surprises on the way as possible. If something does happen then stay strong and never forget to enjoy the tournaments!

I wish you luck with running your first tournament and hopefully after that you will many more successful ones! :)

Both ideas have merit although I'm more interested in the second one. Part of the reason is that the toughest part for some is getting that first tournament filled up. I've watched any number of tournaments fail for two reasons. The first is lack of organization which, as zz mentioned above, you don't seem to suffer from but the other issue is a slow sign up process which causes any number of no shows in the games. For this reason I'd recommend that your first tournament be something that would be open to all the CC community so that it will have a better chance of filling quicker. Also my experience indicates that the two most important things for quickly filling a tournament are an interesting theme and active recruiting.

map choice has a lot to do with it as well, although experienced organizers usually work the map into the theme.
