Can someone list the ranks in order?

? - New recruit
and so on...

or is there a link I can follow in order to see them?
I'd like to know how to rank up as well.

My question is, what do the ranks do to you? In what way do they matter when playing Risk?

They do nothing for you in actual game play. But it affects how many points you gain or lose at the end of the game.

More usefully, they can help you judge which games to join. Higher ranked players are people who've won lots of games, so if you're not ready to play against people who win a lot, you might not want to join games with them yet.

When your a captain in a game of privates, the privates seem to attack you more as you look like a threat

People don't see me as a threat because I'm still ranked lieutenant due to lack of games. I think once people see captain or higher it becomes more of a deal, simply because the icons don't look the same as the first three. If I'm in a game with a colonel I pay them very close attention...
