Let's see .. probably because the language originated in England and we speak a variation of the original, not a true distinct language.

By-the-way, I think most Americans are easier to understand than some of the more distinct dialects in good ol' England ... blame TV for that.

Have to correct you there, not all british people speak english. You are insulting the welsh here who are british but have their own language (welsh).

American people speak english theres no two ways about it, you copied our language back in the day. Changed a few spellings to make it more of your own LOL. The United states does not have an official language, your language is known as american english. I remember studying this at uni. The only language that originated in the U.S was native american, and that varys in many different forms.

My particular dislike in US pronunciation is a cooking one (surprise, surprise).
My family know when I'm watching the Food Channel, even if they're not in the room - every so often, I shout out
"It's CA-RAH-MEL-IZE, you drongo!"
"Carmalize" sounds like a nun of some sort.

But what does get right on my goat is when every-piece of software has US-English as a default.. or there is no choice for 'English' at all... that does rouse my insecurities.
