mentors

Post by joeyjordison »

ok i hav recently made a thread offering some help to any new people who want it. i basically offered to play a doubles game with them and show them some of the finer points of the game. its not a teach them how to play thing coz an instruction manual is better for that but its to get them to grips with playing more. its easy to make mistakes and wen ur new u need to know wat ur doing wrong and why u hav lost 5 games straight in under 3 rounds.

i realised that this has a lot of potential and seeing the number of deadbeats instead of impossing restrictions upon people who are new about wat games they can join we should help them. i think having a list of mentors would be a gd idea. even if its a single game with a couple of points made it all helps.

edit: priority 4

I voted no on the training games thread but I think that this could be really worthwhile if someone like yourself is willing to put the time and effort into it. :)

I think the training thing is actually a good idea. Lots of people that come here have never even played proper Risk, and while they can learn the rules from a tutorial, it wouldn't hurt to lay a little knowledge on them. Worst case scenario, the mentor wastes some time on a deadbeat. Best case, the newbie becomes a contributing member of the site, and the mentor can feel that warm glow of satisfaction as their ward shoots up the scoreboard.

Another idea is to perhaps compile some sort of strategy guide that would be part of the overall tutorial/FAQ here. It's a little less personable, but throwing out a few tips re: fortification or massing of armies or general etiquette would also conceptually raise the level of the play from newcomers.

EDIT: it occurs to me that for this to work properly, when people sign up, they should get a screen that tells them that if they want a mentor, they should PM a particular person (perhaps you, joey, perhaps someone else), who would have a list of vets that have volunteered for the program.
