Unless they're loaded with blanks, you can fire blanks from an AK47 or similar one-handed, even in automatic fire mode (we tried it during military service). It was certainly interesting, but I still wouldn't get an an automatic rifle for home-defense, even if I could.

I would if there was a riot and scores of raiders were storming my house... or maybe if the government wanted to storm my house to infringe on my second amendment rights... if I have to die, it might as well be with one of those in my hands. I'm just pointing out how you can't claim that the right to bear arms allows you to bear any and all weapons. This law doesn't take away that right, it only takes away your ability to own a needlessly powerful weapon.

But you can't collect it just because it's a weapon. Again, there are many weapons that people shouldn't be allowed to just buy, because they're good for absolutely nothing other than looking at, and killing shit. As you go up the scale of power, eventually you get weapons that are just too good at killing, to where their value as defense is outweighed by their potential to kill. Everyone agrees that you shouldn't just own a nuke*, and most americans will agree that responsible people should be allowed to own a basic handgun... the line needs to be drawn somewhere in between those two extremes, but exactly where is what's up for dispute.

I am talking about the guy with 10, 20, 30+ guns, a locker full of ammo, automatic weapons, an assault rifle or two, the requisite "Uzi" (for display only of course!), etc, shaking in fear that tomorrow we will all be living like Mad Max.

As for the Patriot act, this is one of King Georges's biggest f*ck-ups (in a long line of f*ck-ups) and a direct violation of what our country believes in. Funny that the gun nut crowd still loves the guy, isn't it.

And Ditocoaf.....what is silly is that they are not taking the guns away....any gun made prior to the ban is grandfathered and fine to own...you simply canot buy them or madify a post ban weapon into thier definition of a bad gun (adding a big clip / folding stock / flash surpressor).

AND...there are scarier weapons that fire the same round that do not fall under this ban. It is a truly a farce.

I know A LOT of people with that much hardware, they actually do a lot better job of keeping track of and locking up their guns. Because it's not only a collection, it's an investment.
