FREE BPB, Hecter, and DaGip

All of them received bans today (although I got off with a warning). These twenty or so users all got bans because of this thread:

For those of you to lazy to read it, it consisted of this:

Owenshooter wants DaGip banned again because DaGip had owens avatar as his own (because owens avatar was his picture)
DaGip gets a three day ban for flaming outside of FW and a mod removes the avatar, but couldn't warn DaGip for it since you can't receive PMs during bans
DaGip thinks that the mod removed it because of the flame when the mod removed it because it was personal info so he puts it back up
Dagip gets a warning for that
Owenshooter wants DaGip to serve a month ban like Mustard
Others point out that everyone in the BPB also has the avatar in their sigs
Twill comes in and bans DaGip as well as everyone in the BPB for a day
Hecter posts the sig again and receives a ban
I quote the sig and I receive a warning

I am not very annoyed as these were only day long bans, but i'm sure most of the people in the BPB had no idea this was going on and feel like they've received bans out of nowhere.

I personally think that the rules definitely need to be thought through a little more, since banning everyone in the clan for having a sig with someones picture in it is over the edge. I mean, avatars are used to represent people. If someone wants their avatar to be their picture, others should be allowed to use it because it is what represents that person. It's not like everyone who quotes someones avatar is using it as a flame. I think that if you use an image as your avatar, others should be allowed to use it because you are making it public.

One other point I would like to make is that the ban makes some sense. Twill didn't want a double standard and let everyone off in the BPB without a warning. I even received a warning for quoting the picture. That brings up another issue:

If you quote a picture in the post a picture of yourself thread, should you receive a warning/ban?

timmy, I give you props for posting a thread that lays out a cohesive scenario and issue without immediate attacking Twill or the Team.

There is one piece of information in your post that is not accurate, but really needs clarified because it's important in the flow of events.

(I did not ever ban gip for using your avatar, I put him on a vacation for flaming you in a separate instance and removed the avatar because it was a flame)

Twill clearly lays out why DaGip was given the 3-day vacation, and it was not because of the avatar being a picture of owen. I believe what happened is that he was vacationed for posting a flame, and THEN it was realized that the avatar was a flame as well. Because a mod could not PM him asking him to remove the avatar (which is the proper moderator procedure), Twill had to remove it himself. But it was removed for being a flame, not for being personal information.

Now that it has been clarified, I don't have an opinion on the actual issue at this time, but I will keep watch on this thread. (So no flaming please. )

If it were up to me...

To keep it simple, I would make the rule state that you cannot post any other person's personal information. Period.

But, I would only enforce the rule when it is actually necessary.

That sounds like I am advocating leaving a large amount of discretion within the hands of the mods. And I am.

People start threads asking for advice on their personal lives. It is sometimes hard to respond to these posts without commenting on personal information. But I don't think anyone would object to this, as long as it isn't a "flame". There are other cases where it is not harmful and the posting of personal information should be disregarded.

But by making the rule cover all cases of any mention of another user's personal information, it means that if a person complains or is concerned with the material about him or herself, a warning can be issued and it will be stopped. And there doesn't need to be a discussion about it. It is a rule. Period. And if the request to cease and desist is not heeded, then a ban should be the punishment. Of course, there are situations where a ban is deserved before a warning.

I know people here will always say "But SoAndSo did the exact same thing in the OtherThread thread and he wasn't banned!?!?!?!!?!?" And the mods will ignore these cries for equal treatment. As they should. Because they are almost always ridiculous. At least the last 30 times or so that I've read these "pleas for justice" I've thought that the mods were doing a decent job and some users were just being overly dramatic.

With regards to personal information, at least one person failed to think this through completely, probably Owen, possibly also Twill.

Owen must have known that his picture was all over the place in the sigs, complaining that someone else is using it is quite silly in those circumstances. I'm also not sure if DaGip knew it was an actual picture of Owen, I know I didn't know it. How large a role does intent play? How about images of random people you find on the internet? How about celebrities?

The intent of the rule against posting private information of others is certainly good, but the way in which it is enforced here seems a little... arbitrary.


Banning a whole clan if no complaint has been filed specifically against them is extremely stupid. Good way of getting back at Owen, Twill, but I think the collateral damage is too high. Furthermore:

I am also placing you on a 24 hour vacation for using other people's images in your banner.

Do you have proof that Owen has been using the actual image of another person in his sig? So far the only one of an actual person that is known of (at least known to me) is his own, and he is free to post that one wherever he wants.

well, honestly, and no offence to anyone including twill, I am not sure a full out day ban for all in the bpb was necessary. Although hecter and you as well timmy, used that sig to provoke the mods and anyone else and that is a no no since you did use that personal information as a tool in this instance. Maybe it was suppose to be intended as a joke...and therefore was the reason you only received a warning. But hecter is a repeat offender and as instructed, he received a 24 hour ban for it.

If the subject of the personal information is unwise enough to post personal information about themselves in the public domain, then it becomes public property. If the subject then becomes unhappy with other users posting about or otherwise utilising said personal information within the confines of CC, tough! Should have thought about that before hitting the submit button.

If the personal information is used in a manner by another user that could be construed as massively offensive(such as bigotry of any kind), then that is the only time I would expect the site staff to intervene in these matters.

Let's not forget that anyone that posts YouTube links should be banned as well. YouTube has a plethora of links to all kinds of personal info and porn!

(I am just joking, of course, but if CC mods are going to be pushing the limits on personal info and such, YouTube is a hot site rife with the potential of abuse)
