Respect the Newbie before he bites you on the ass

Post by Cesspitt »

I appreciate that there are many experienced and good players in this community and as a player of a certain board game for nearly twenty six years finding this web site had a pretty big impact once I realised how organised and welcoming it was.

But, and yes there is a 'BUT', why do most (please note not all) people assume that the question mark means target, pratt, useless, crap, lucky (thats my favourite), awful or even a cheat??

Just finished one game where the opponent simply stiffed me from turn one and allowed another 'better' player (by this I mean high ranking experienced player) to wait and kill us both. Then had the audacity to accuse me on my wall, where no forum moderator would have to refute him, of cheating when i have probably beem playing the damn game longer than he has been alive (wow thats scary!).
Now Mantis (this is the sore loser) is the worst culprit of this bias to 'known' players and while I am an adult who can take criticism I feel a lot of you long standing guys have to do one of two things here.

1. If you have this bias, grow up, respect all the players and get over the fact you may lose. Stop assuming you have a god given right to beat anyone with less than 20 games under their belt and give up the abuse when you know you where the instigator of your own destruction.
2. If you see another so called 'experienced' player doing this tell them....hell it may make them realise they are being dumb and might make the game more exciting. Takes a strong person to tell someone to play properly when it means they might have to try harder to then win!

Anyway I now expect to see many people (if they read this) to soundly beat me up for my insolence especially if friends of mantis and I accept that because I say bring it on, you only have your score to lose and mine is only going to get better.

Cheers peeps

You raise a good a valid point.

I guess players expect the worst and make assumptions when they see non premium new members. I know the mods and the hunters are busting as many multies as they can, but it's a constant struggle.

And like any on line community, we have some undesirables. Perhaps you had the poor luck of running into an asshole in your first few matches.

Some say you cant buy respect, but here if you are a premium you will find that you get the benefit of the doubt a lot quicker than if you are a non paying member.

My hope is that you will stick around, find a nicer selection of members to play against and with, and endure the ocasional twit.

The only ones who will beat up on you are the ones who think they are a cut above. However most people here seem ok, even the multi-coloured messiah(I'm sure he'll be along in a bit). My advice is laugh at the wankers and laugh with your friends.

People get judged on their ranks. You will get more respect in due course.

You are right of course, and I will just point out, that this is a game of numbers, luck, psychology, and certainly respect should be shown to every player...

however, anticipating great play out of a new player isnt worth it...the odds of them being good, unfortunately is so low, that youre better off expecting the absolute unexpected.

Im not disagreeing with you...just letting you know as a veteran, that after more than 5k games, and quite a bit of experience when i got here....that while the ranks hardly tell you exactly what to expect.... no really talented player has a low score for very long...so practically speaking...and im not saying its right... the one bars will always have a tougher time

but welcome, and hope to see you kicking some arse...and like all of us...learning some interesting things about the game...that even after 20 years...had no idea about...

the grand scale of this place changes everything

good luck!

Yeah really, I learned that I am just a big fish in a small pond. On a worldwide scale, I suck ass.

Those turkies don't usually frequent these forums. Almost all of the regulars are good people. Even the multi-colored Jesus.

Well, I don't want to stick up for Mantis since he appears to be a douche, but you were kind of a jackass to him in Game 4115738. So it's not as though he made the comment on your wall unprovoked.

About 400 ?'s join a day. They all join 4 games. that is 1600 games a day. And since About 200 make it to 5 games. That is 800 games a day that have deadbeats.

That I think could cause some disgruntlement. I find though that if you PM them or converse with them right away, they got a good chance of finishing.

I have nothing but respect for the new person, So much so that I refuse to call them newby's
