If you don't want to read obscenities, go to a website that does not permit them. This one does. If you don't want your children exposed to obscene language, monitor their activities more carefully - either don't allow them to play here, or permit them to play games with opponents you know and trust. Either that, or you could ask the Admin to create a "family zone" setting where anyone can play, but swearing and insults are not permitted. I'm not looking for a line; I asked you for a rule - a bright line rule. It's a rule that is easy to apply and determine whether a violation occurred. You asked why it was hard to distinguish between "chat abuse" [presumably impermissible] and "occasional swearing and trash talk" [presumably permissible]. Your question implied that it was easy to distinguish between these two categories of conduct. So, maybe it is not after all. Alas, no bright line rule. But let's see if we can articulate any rule. It appears from your latest post, that you cannot.

It fails to simply say that there is no rule, but there is a difference. How are we supposed to know if our own conduct violates some inarticulable principle or prohibition? You cannot merely point to conduct and say, "that's chat abuse" and offer no explanation as to how you reached your conclusion. Copying and pasting the alleged violative conduct fails to satisfy. We all know WHAT you are complaining of; I want to know on what basis is the conduct objectionable.

Pointing to same vague prohibition on intentionally annoying others also fails. This sets up no real rule, and it gives far too much discretion to the moderators to determine what constitutes "intentional annoyance."

Basically, I see this complain as boiling down to: you can be an ass, but you can't be THAT big of an ass. And we don't know where to draw the line, but we know that codeblue has crossed it. Epic fail.

I asked bones for a bright line rule because he implied that it was easy to distinguish between permissible trash talk and swearing as opposed to chat abuse. I don't think it is. My rule? You won't like it, but I'd say everything is OK. As far as adults are concerned, act like one. People can be rude, nasty assholes anywhere. We're on an online, anonymous gaming site. If someone is rude to you, ignore it. Stop playing against them. If someone is a jerk to you at Starbucks or at the gym [or wherever], do you run to the manager like they are some sort of niceness police? Probably not. So why here, do we get so many complaints that 'so-and-so was mean to me?'

As far as children are concerned, I really think it is an issue of parental supervision and responsibility. I don't think young kids should be permitted to browse the internet unsupervised with no restrictions. If you are permitting your children to do so, then be prepared for them to encounter a codeblue or someone far, far worse.

The problem, as I see it, is that we don't have any clear guidelines on what type of speech is prohibited. There has been a severe lack in consistency in the manner in which allegedly abusive speech is dealt with. I find it intolerable that the moderators are permitted such wide discretion in making this determination without any guidelines provided. The "law" or rule as you described is horribly vague. What is "objectionable" speech, and why is it objectionable? How do we go about distinguishing between banter and abuse?

So, do you have a bright-line rule you'd like to propose? While Calkid's "free speech" argument may be misguided in the context of Conquer Club not being a state actor, I understand that Conquer Club does have an objectionable speech "law." Therefore, presumably, a bright-line rule may exist. If a bright-line rule does not exist, the moderators/hunters act as the Supreme Court in interpreting Conquer Club's objectionable speech "law." Therefore, either a bright-line rule exists and can be applied or the moderators determine whether codeblue's chat is objectionable in the context of Conquer Club "law."

I believe I've answered both of your (12XU's) questions/concerns. As for Calkid's "get a life" comment... um, we're playing a computer game and "chatting" on the message boards. I think "getting a life" is beyond us (including Calkid) at this point.

I also happen to find codeblue's chat extremely funny and entertaining... but, then, I don't have children that play Conquer Club.

I asked bones for a bright line rule because he implied that it was easy to distinguish between permissible trash talk and swearing as opposed to chat abuse. I don't think it is. My rule? You won't like it, but I'd say everything is OK. As far as adults are concerned, act like one. People can be rude, nasty assholes anywhere. We're on an online, anonymous gaming site. If someone is rude to you, ignore it. Stop playing against them. If someone is a jerk to you at Starbucks or at the gym [or wherever], do you run to the manager like they are some sort of niceness police? Probably not. So why here, do we get so many complaints that 'so-and-so was mean to me?'

As far as children are concerned, I really think it is an issue of parental supervision and responsibility. I don't think young kids should be permitted to browse the internet unsupervised with no restrictions. If you are permitting your children to do so, then be prepared for them to encounter a codeblue or someone far, far worse.

The problem, as I see it, is that we don't have any clear guidelines on what type of speech is prohibited. There has been a severe lack in consistency in the manner in which allegedly abusive speech is dealt with. I find it intolerable that the moderators are permitted such wide discretion in making this determination without any guidelines provided. The "law" or rule as you described is horribly vague. In my limited time as a member of this site, I have not read enough about how the moderators have dealt with abusive speech. However, based on what I have read, it appears that if the Moderators determine that the speech will drive people away from the site (especially newer, paying customers), the Moderators will determine such speech to be abusive.

In any event, I'll stop posting because I don't want to hijack the thread either; especially considering my basic point with regards to codeblue is that the Moderators will determine what, if anything, he has done wrong, and will act accordingly.

I don't play with him anymore, and as for you example of starbucks, depending if they violate my space they might just get hit in the mouth, and if I feel that my life is threatened then they might find a pistol pointed in their face. Either way your example to me holds no water. I doubt very seriously that codeblue behaves this way in public. He hides behind his keyboard and talks crap. If he were to start his tirades in public I would guess that he would be heard by the majority of people present and no manager help would be needed as he would most likely be escorted off of the premises. And its a fact that children play on here, and some of them if not the majority of them have premium accounts, mine doesn't and hasn't played on here in quite a long time, because of the spew that occurs on this site. She has begged for me to buy her a premium account as she loves risk, and she is quite good at the computer version and board version of it, but I had to refrain because there are people like codeblue on this site that run their mouths unchecked and seem to have no consequences when they do.
