One of the reasons that (have I said this before?) Brits tend to have a very negative attitude to firearms is that, in the UK there are for the most part two sorts of people who have guns:

(i) Chinless parasites that shoot at grouse and partridge and an occasional deer on big privately-owned estates. They probably hunt foxes too.

(ii) Criminals.

Neither of these categories are that popular, especially (i).

In America elitists don't own guns...they own police departments. In America, real men stand up for themselves...they don't bride some corrupt people to do it for them. In fact...they buy guns, legally register them, take training classes, and learn to shoot criminals.

I still can't fathom how irrational some people's fear of the US turning towards communism is - I also think that the gun lobby are so crazy about their guns because it's the ultimate phallic symbol. I bet holding a gun makes you feel like a real man - it's so empowering to have the ability to kill another living entity from 20 feet away with the twitch of a finger.

The word i would have for it would be cowardice.

Was wondering how long you could stay away pedro....lol.

And Jones.....that is a very interesting view you have. Five generations of my "chinless" bretheren have been hunting Chuckar (a partridge) in the god forsaken hills of eastern oregon on open, government owned land. Classified as some of the hardest physical activity in the world, hunting wise. I would love to see if you could keep up.........

Oh......and I guess our entire nation qualifies as chinless, eh? No tea for me thanks......lol.

Here is a pic of the beginning of one of the smaller hills :D

Koolbak,

Where is that picture taken? That sure looks a lot like the Mopin or central(ish) deschutes river area, or the hills between Baker City and Ontario.

That part of the state is some brutal terrain. I will also point out, there are hundreds of thousand of acres of wilderness like that in Oregon. And the associated risks of wild alimals out there. There are a lot of places I won't camp around here, without having a gun with me, just in case.

Dewey-

Nice to meet ya - I am in West Linn by the way ;o) That picture is on the hills above the old Sag Road and looking down on the small town of Richland....that is the first town you get to when you leave the highway at Baker City and head east....about 35 miles or so. Gateway to Hells Canyon baby ;o) I been going there every year for over 30 years.....my dad for over 45.....beautiful country.

Seen lots of rattlers over the years but the problem NOW are the cougers....they are exploding and there have been many encounters in the last year. Seen a couple black bear - beautiful creatures but very timid. A damn 5 point bull almost ran me down last year....lol.

Good call on the land recognition my friend ;o)

Haha, enough years out here, and you learn to pick up the little things that seperate all the different area's in the PNW. ;)

I have not had a big cat run-in, but I have heard lots of story's in the last few years too. I have had a couple of beer encouters. The black beers to be mindful of, are the ones who are in semi-populated area's. My family had a house on coast, and we had several black beers in the area. They had been living near people long enough that they were far from timid!

Well, that was my point rather - that this Brit situation isn't true in the whole of the U.S. - there are places and situations in the U.S, where carrying a gun and indeed using it doesn't make you a Brit (a) or (b).
But when gunphobic Brits think "gun" they are not on the whole people who will have used one or know legit people who do.
This tends to colour Brit thinking on the question, so that at times the Brit is thinking "why would anyone ever need a gun" while the U.S. type is thinking "I like shooting critters".
Just trying to be helpful and point out one reason why the cultures and attitudes are fundamentally different.

(and not putting forward any opinion on the shape of your, or your family's jaw structure - which I'm sure is suitably present, not to say square and capable of thrusting forward in a determined manner).

lol....well thank you Jonezy for that clarification....it is appreciated. :D You know, for us at least it is the cameraderie of the trip and the hunt more than the "killing" per se.......an excellent family tradition with my father, brother, son and brothers in law and friends. We really enjoy the bird (when we get any) but the trip and the experience is key......although the older I get the tougher it is to make those damn hikes every year.....luckily my strokes put me to sleep quickly at night.

I personally have never hunted large game nor will I....different strokes and all.....lol

It's a cultural difference. When you travel, you often find your cultural norms differs from those of other people. When I went to Tuscany, for instance, any reasonably open piece of ground near trees would be littered with empty shotgun pellet cases. When Brit tourists see a songbird, they think "pretty". When the locals see a songbird they think "pretty tasty".

I agree.

My husband is an AVID sportsman, excellent hunter (shooting-wise and sportsmanwise), my sons are/will hunt. (at 2 ... not quite yet)

HOWEVER... I also got pretty darned tired of being told that walking in our public forest alone WITH ORANGE all over was dangerous and "ill-advised" (granted, NO ONE but hunters go out here during the 2 weeks of deer season ....).

I get tired of walking OUTSIDE OF hunting season (STILL wearing ORANGE), and hearing bullets whistle past my ears because someone is taking their child out target shooting and they figure "no one would ever be in the woods" OUT HERE!.

I got REALLY tired of being lectured, when I was WORKING FOR THE GOVERNMENT, and being told that I "really shouldn't be out here .. its dangerous!" (never mind that they would think nothng of letting their daughters drive the freeways!)

EVERY YEAR people get shot and killed ... some are hunters in the woods, some are just sitting peacefully in their houses. (2 cases in PA last year alone!).

STILL, if you want hunting to continue to be allowed and legal, then make sure your buddies act responsibly!

It is not Obama who will take your guns away. It is moms who are tired of not having their kids safe. It is people in cities who have never walked in the woods in their life, but who probably do know someone who was shot.

AND it is people who are just plain tired of living in fear because no matter how many people have guns for good and honest reasons, there STILL seem to be a whole lot of just plain jerks and psychopaths who have them.

You want to keep your guns? Make sure that the people who have them KNOW HOW TO USE them and ACT RESPONSIBLY.

That does mean some controls, unfortunately. But do you really want a convicted felon or psycotic individual to have free access to a weapon? Do you really want to make it easy for a man with a temper to run out an buy a gun before he has a chance to cool down? None of these things will prevent all harm. But, are they really and truly going to prevent law-abiding and honest individuals from having their guns and using them?

Will they prevent a large number of accidents and crimes? Statistics have shown that limited regulation does increase safety, decrease certain crimes. (crimes of passion, etc.).

If you make this an "all or nothing" game ... you will not wind up with all... gaurantee it. Why? because those who dislike guns far outnumber those who like them. Why? because all too often the gun owners people see on the news, on TV, etc are plain old-fashioned jerks.

As I said, I know there are many wonderful responsible gun-using people. Not just for hunting, but for protection as well. Still.... if gun owners do not police themselves, are not helping to create real regulations that will help ensure safety and responsiblity, then a lot of people WILL just say "no" to guns!

hey kool

on a serious note, if the ammo shelves are empty, are you keeping your ammo at home in a cabinet, or are you out in the wilds blasting at things?

If I were in America and saw ammo being rationed, i'd think long and hard about a bit of sport shooting
