This is using a the map from WW1 with the right countries shown
only thing is, it groups up empires for example Russia is now one country only rather than many ruled by one leader
do you think i should use the modern map with the empires on or use the WW1 map and break up the countries?

i want a list of empires. i currently have:

• British
  French
  German
  Italian
  Chinese
  Austro-Hungarian
  Portuguese
  Russian
  Dutch
  Ottoman

Should i add:

• More territories to South America?
  More empires?
  More territories to North America

What does this mean about Russia? It included Ukraine, Belarus and many other countries. And besides even if that were the point you cannot ignore the largest empire in terms of land area.

While we are at it what empire did Spain have at the start of WWI? None, because most (if not all) of South America was already independent.

P.S. Brazil was part of the Portuguese empire once (before WWI) which wasn't part of the Spanish Empire at that time either.

Also if we are speaking WWI you've got to have the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire.

you definatly need portugal though and if this is shortly before WWI as posted britain and spain didn't have anything in USA

also spain and italy look too simular

a good map idia though, could maki a good map

Edit: looking at the map the sprad of empires would make it very hard to gain a continent, but it would also make playability unique-whether this is good or bad i'm not sure

Brazil had gained independence from Portugal in the early 1820s if I am not mistaken. It can't be part of a Portuguese empire if this map is staged in WWI as I said earlier. It all depends on the age the map is based upon.

Note that when WW1 is taken as year of reference most of the countries in the map were already independent, such as Canada, the United states and most of the countries in south-america...

i think i might change it away from WWI to a time when the empires were at their biggest.

WW2 limites the number of countries, and when you use the time empires were at their biggest there are troubles with overlap. i.e. Spain ruled like most of the world around 1700, but before WW1 they lost almost all their colonies.

Another good example is Sri Lanka, which belonged to The Portuguese, the British ánd the Dutch. Same problem as well for several carebian islands.
