Tipping Point

Post by eclecto »

In most games there is a point where a player has an almost insurmountable advantage. Sometimes this point is not obvious. However, a fairly good player will notice it and almost ANYTHING within reason will be successful, the dice notwithstanding.

I have made some incredibly stupid choices after the tipping point and still it makes very little difference.

Thoughts?

It depends immensely on the type and size of the game.

Hmmm... and it also depends a lot on the tipping point, e.g. if it's square or rectangular. If the latter, well, then the game is over. But if the former, it really can go anyway. Just like the pink ones.

I agree that it depends on the point. If your playing a game where one player has most of the map, and holds 1 or 2 bonuses and they other guy has 7 armies on 5 territories, its pretty had to turn around. One guys dropping 12 armies a turn and the other guy is dropping 3. Even if they guy ahead sits there and attacks neutrals its still extremely unlikely that he will loose. (I'm describing a situation with only 2 players in the game).

So to answer, there is chance (or luck if prefer) in this game and there is skill. You can win more games if you are more skilled, but in any one game your skill may not be enough. The only solution is to play chess. But then no matter how good you get, even if you devote your life to it, your unlikely to beat the best in the world. So I think that's why a lot of us like to play a game that invovles some chance. A reasonably good player has a chance against the best risk player in the world in 1 game. In fact a shitty player has a chance if they are playing on doodle earth : )
