A Point of Interest...

Post by Bob_1171st »

On the board me and my mates have resolved a condition that looks a bit like;

Image

Notes:
-Colours denote players
-'?' are neutral territories if white with an undisclosed number of neutral armies
-'0' denotes that there is no army present defending this territory.
-The game allows for players to take sequentail moves with, light blue, then green, then black, then yellow, then dark brown, dark blue and finally red.

As you might have already guessed the rules for this game are somewhat customised to allow for esponage and not placing armies. But given this game situation, and assumeing that your opitions are just the same as a standard RISK game, in terms of attacks and chained movement of a single army stack. What would you do in the position of light brown (Great Britain and Northern Europe)?

I think that this is one of the most interesting game setups I have seen in ages, I mean we have someone who is going to get knocked out next turn either by red, or light blue. But at the same time we have Africa being probally within one turn of being unified. Black already owns the pacfic and could be making in roads into South America next turn, and green has probally turtled a large force over the last 10 turns, so will they make a strike for the US?

Also what is Russia like? with no intelligance it is a fools move to assume that they are weak, but knowledge of their eastern strenght makes you wonder if they have any large troop concentrations...

While not a standard game, it really makes me wonder what the outcome of the next few turns will be...

What do you think?

(If your interested the 'fog of war', removal was conducted by sacrificing 1 army for every territory revealed, to show the game state for that player that turn. I.e. for revealing light blues territory I had to spend 1 army, while for black 6. I didn't know before making the decision what the cost to me would be)

Am I mistaken, or have you come to ask for strategic advice on a game you're playing at another site?

This forum is for CC related strategy.

Where/when was I playing it? On a normal RISK board, well, one that looks like the picture. It's not on another site.

I thought the game at this point was terribly interesting. Hence I thought I would post it up to see what you guys would have done being in the position of light brown. Not looking for advice, the game was over awhile ago now.

The Conquer Club all being about RISK type games should be the place to put a post like this to see what master stratergists would have done having been given that particular senario and to discuss what opitions would play out to give a good result for this turn.

By writing down the number of troops on cards, and not disclosing the numbers across to other players ;)

But that's an off topic question. If you'd like me to discuss the game mechanics I will do so, but for the state of play presented the mechnics of how the game was run doesn't matter.

That's a neat idea.

On topic, I might have just missed it, but I didn't see what type (if any) of cards you were using. That will make a significant difference in what your best option would be.

Troops already deployed for this turn, assume that there are no spoils cards for any player.

See given this senario, I would be greatly tempted to go through the neutral powers to the North. With any luck, brown might have already attacked them, and if not they would only contain 3 armies at max. If I could breakout into Greenland, then that would mean that light blue would be surrounded.

However doing so would leave me vunerable to counter attack, so such a move would have to be taken in conjunction with a quick assualt on Iceland to break him down a few armies to think twice about counter attack.

Doing that would leave both us as players relatively weak, but with a solid link to NA.

The other opition would be to try a continant break on Africa, blue doesn't have a large army in Europe after a few turns (I don't know why I made the map unreavealed for Spain, it was 2 armies there). This is because next turn Yellow might conquer South Africa, hence putting him in a rather advantagous position against me. This may be a better move for me as a player as Green has sat tight in Central America, and might think about using this turn for taking some of North America. Equally likely Peru and Argintina could be the target for this player.

In the long run, I think that the continant break is a better move. But however due to the complexity of the game it might not be from other players points of view. (If you interested this was relatively mid-late game, and cards have been cashed at points, but assume that they are not in play for deciding what you would do. In the actual game, only pink had enough to make a set at the time, most other players haveing just cashed in, in sequence)
