Thats only a rumor not a fact. At the time of Jeffersons Presidency he was accused of haveing sex with a slave but the Jeffersons claimed it was a family member that was haveing sex with the slave. Later a blood test was taken on one of the Slaves desendants and proved that he was a desendant of a Jefferson which means that either theory could be true. There were other Jeffersons liveing in D.C. also. Thomas Jefferson was strongly opposed to slavery so I do not believe he would do something like that.

The way the term is tossed around by as good many people here and in the world today .. perhaps, though not in reality.

As for the rest, he was a man of this times. He helped create great changes, had a lot to do with our current government and is to ne celebrated for that. He held slaves, which is terrible, but apparently treated them better than most in that day. In truth, though I don't pretend it makes slavery nice, many a free white person had a far tougher life, was treated more poorly than his slaves. (life then was not easy)

Judging him by today's yardstick with our knowledge and culture is simply not reasonable. We can celebrate the good he did and still condemn his imperfections.

There is no longer any real serious dispute that Jefferson was in love with one of his slaves and had at least one child by her.

As for his views/treatment of slaves. He is on record as being opposed to slavery, but we also have to realize that such big changes take time. Among other issues, his freeing his slaves would not necessarily have resulted in a better lifestyle for them. I am not saying that makes up for the great evil of slavery, (the treatment was at the whim of the owner for one thing). However, by today's standards, even "free" white people were not necessarily truly free, never mind people of color. An oridinary citizen could not even vote! Only property holders could vote.

Should he, could he have acted better? Yes. But, if he had taken a huge stand on slavery then, in those days, then it is likely his other ideas would not have been so well considered.
