British European Elections

Post by nagerous »

Don't just be an idiot and not vote...

Every vote counts as a system of proportional representation.

Political apathy from a disinterested liberal majority will result in far right candidates winning seats.

I'm voting because I got my Poll Card posted to me. Plus my local Tory MP was the only one who bothered to send leaflets round.

You realise that advocating the far right means advocating racism. I don't know if it was in jest but here are some classic Nick Griffin quotes:

"So, what are we now doing with the British National Party? Well we tried to simplify its message in some ways and to make it a saleable message. So it's not white supremacy or racial civil war or anything like that, which is what we know in fact is going on, and we're not supremacists, we're white survivalists, even that frightens people. Four apple pie words, freedom, security, identity and democracy."

On the holocaust:

"I am well aware that the orthodox opinion is that 6 million Jews were gassed and cremated and turned into lampshades. Orthodox opinion also also once held that the Earth was flat... I have reached the conclusion that the "extermination" tale is a mixture of Allied wartime propaganda, extremely profitable lie, and latter witch-hysteria." (1998 - Statement outside court)

On homosexuality:

"The TV footage of dozens of gay demonstrators flaunting their perversions in front of the world's journalists showed just why so many ordinary people find these creatures so repulsive."

Oh and a classic from one of his associates, Nick Erikson on rape:

"I've never understood why so many men have allowed themselves to be brainwashed by the feminazi myth machine into believing that rape is such a serious crime ... Rape is simply sex. Women enjoy sex, so rape cannot be such a terrible physical ordeal. To suggest that rape, when conducted without violence, is a serious crime is like suggesting that force-feeding a woman chocolate cake is a heinous offence. A woman would be more inconvenienced by having her handbag snatched."

That these people may be elected into the European Parliament is a travesty! Vote June 4th!

Vote Libertarian!!!

Sorry, I wanted to post in a non-US political thread since all of you guys post in the US political threads. Further proof that US citizens know nothing about politics outside the US. And I'm one of the more learned Americans. Sigh...

To be perfectly honest nagerous, I don't think you need to worry about the BNP - they've shot themselves in the foot bigtime.

VOTE UKIP!

This is going to be the first time I vote and I am still not sure where to vote. Definately not Tory, either Labour or SNP haven't made my mind up yet.

Is that because of age or just that you've never bothered before.

I'll be voting UKIP, I think. Although until I place my vote I wont be entirely sure. It might be Tory.

friday 22.5.2009
Matt Mold won the Irwell Riverside by-election with a reduced majority. The Lib Dems came second and the BNP third.
A pitiful 17.5% of voters turned out.

Labour - 606 votes
Lib Dems - 293 votes
BNP - 276 votes
Conservatives - 189 votes
Green - 125 votes
UKIP - 123 votes

I was surprised to see how badly ukip did.

I couldn't care less what nagerous said in his first post regarding the BNP. They are the most right wing party to vote for and the party that will scare the shit out of the the big three if they do well.
I'm voting for BNP

Don't vote for Labour or the Conservatives. It's their greedy MP's who have stolen the most in the expenses scandal.

The Lib Dem MP's were much better than tory / labour. only 50% of their MP's took the piss.
the tories and labour mps taking the piss was more like 90-95%

These cunts should be made unemployed as soon as possible.

These are European elections Jonesy - It's not as if the BNP are going to be able to do too much.
UKIP have a couple of MEP's and I've not seen them lording it about recently about what a massive difference they have made in Europe.
If UKIP were doing all sorts of wonderful stuff for Britain on our behalf - they would be shouting it from the rooftops.

Well, I'm not that fond of UKIP, but in any case a party that believes we shouldn't be in the EU is hardly likely to be effective in the European political arena.

I haven't set up a proxy vote option, I'm afraid - but the last few times I voted was purely on a "vote against X" logic, rather than voting for the party I'd supported (and raised money for and leafleted for and more) my whole political life, which then abandoned its roots and as far as I could see its principles.

The BNP should be offered no smallest crumb of support though.

So, an American wonders... What are the basic platforms of these parties? I can guess Green easily enough, but how about the others? I'm particularly interested in this UKIP.

UKIP is the UK Independance Party and basically want us out of Europe. The BNP are our far right bigots. The Monster Raving Loony Party are just that. The Tories are right wing, the Labour left and the Liberal Democrats swerve all over the middle of the road. Although as time passes left and right apparently become interchangable.

There is no way on earth I will ever vote BNP. As a protest vote that pretty irresponsible.

No. Below is a brief summary....taken from the website

* UKIP will leave the political EU and trade globally and freely. We will re-embrace today’s fast-growing Commonwealth and we will encourage UK manufacturing so that we make things again.
* We will freeze immigration for five years, speed up deportation of up to a million illegal immigrants by tripling the numbers engaged in deportations, and have ‘no home no visa’ work permits to ease the housing crisis.
* We will have a grammar school in every town. We will restore standards of education and improve skills training. Student grants will replace student loans.
* We will radically reform the working of the NHS with an Insurance Fund, whilst upholding the ‘free at the point of care’ principles. We will bring back matrons and have locally run, clean hospitals.
* We will give people the vote on policing priorities, go back to proper beat policing and scrap the Human Rights Act. We will have sentences that mean what they say.
* We will take 4.5 million people out of tax with a simple Flat Tax (with National Insurance) starting at £10,000. We will scrap Inheritance Tax, not just reform it and cut corporation taxes.
* We will say No to green taxes and wind farms. To avert a major energy crisis, we will go for new nuclear power plants on the same existing site facilities and for clean coal. We will reduce pollution and encourage recycling.
* We will make welfare simpler and fairer, introduce ‘workfare’ to get people back to work, and a new citizens pension and private pensions scheme insurance.
* We will support our armed forces with more spending on equipment, military homes and medical care. We will save our threatened warships and add 25,000 more troops.
* We will be fair to England, with an English Parliament of English MPs at Westminster. We will replace assembly members like MSPs with MPs. And we will promote referenda at local and national levels.
* We will make customer satisfaction number one for rail firms – not cost cutting and will look seriously at reopening some rail lines that Beeching closed. We will make foreign lorries pay for British roads with a ‘Britdisc’ – and we will stop persecuting motorists.
* Last, but never least, we will bring in fair prices and fair competition for our suffering farmers, and restore traditional British fishing and territorial waters.

I like this party. They seem to be in line with most of my interests, more so than the realistic alternatives in the US.

A lot of what they say isnt really feasible. The railways that they will look into reopening, for instance, is a non starter. After the Beeching report in 1962, 4065 miles of track was closed between 1963 and 73. I cant imagine the cost of reopening even a tenth of lines that were closed over 35 years ago. I cant see there being a grammer school in every town either.

I like the first 2 points and the NHS needs something radical doing to it. But the chances of UKIP getting into power is slim.

What is wrong with the NHS? I ask for purely selfish reasons because I think we're going that route at some point in the next 4 to 8 years.
