Plains of Abraham (1st draft)

Post by MarathonMax »

OK, this is my first attempt at a map, so please be gentle. Actually, no! I do want your honest opinion about this. Hard and cold facts. You are friends, I can take it LOL.

The ideas behind this map are the following:
- Respect of the historical aspect much like Gazala Line map
- Multiple continent bonus layers like in the New York City game
- Canons that fire one way like in Texan Wars
- Inset (close-up) a la WWII Europe

Some of the many questions I have for you:
- Should the map be colorized?
- Are their enough territories?
- Are the bonuses right?
- Do you think the game play is viable?

Some of the things I still need to do:
- Pretty-up the legend
- Name the territories

And of course on my to-do list: incorporate all you proposals :).

Regards,

Max

You should definitely color this map, also consider trying to make the historic writings on this easier to read. I think it could use a few more terries. Once you add more terries you could up a few of the bonuses. Also those big blue triangle for cannon assaults should be made smaller, or simpler, perhaps just a small arrow. The big triangles are rather distracting.

All in all though for a first attempt/first draft its not bad.

I'm a little confused by the map, but there's enough that I like about it to stay interested. I agree that the blue arrows are distracting. I like the antiquated look of the map, but I find it hard to read. Maybe a faded yellow background and bolder black lettering would work. Like you've alluded to, the font for the bonuses should also be changed to match the overall look of the map.

Thank you soooo much guys. I am already working on an improved version with:

- increased readability
- more territories
- clearer "one way" attacks (no more cones!)
- adding territ names
- improved legend
- and a a few graphical options that I will ask you to comment on

I will get back to you all next week

Thanks

Max

Nice idea. I had tried to get a mpa of this going with Lanyards a while back (though with different gameplay...we were thinking more of a Feudal War type). Good luck in your attempt! Always thought this battle deserved it's own map

This battle MOST DEFINITELY deserves it's own map.

I second the opinions made thus far by CC members here; and I eagerly await the release of the second version.

Best wishes Max !

Um, one thing. The map you're using is a photocopy or similar of something out of a book. That's seriously detracting from readability, people wanting to comment (I've postponed it for over a week), and the like. Take that photocopy as inspiration, but build a map on top of that from relative scratch. Otherwise, things aren't going to go very far on this map as comments die. :\

Guys,

I just wanted to give you a quick update on the this map. I am still working on it and I am addressing the concerns voiced here.

I have installed GIMP (open source equivalent to Photo Shop) on my iMac and I am quickly learning it.

I am working off a new map. The one seen here was great for the plains battle itself but was too blurry for graphics. On the new map, I will however render the plains battle as per the original map. I will also colourized the new map. More sexy :).

I am still addressing one of my biggest concern with the original design: between the south shore and the north shore only two entry points existed. Although in real life actually only one did exist (native Indians helped the Brits at Gilmour Hill to find the only path leading to the plains), I will add a few attack points here and there.

So, stay tuned and thank you for your patience.

[Moved]

It would appear that development of this map has stalled. If the mapmaker wants to continue with the map, then one of the Foundry Moderators will be able to help put the thread back into the Foundry system, after an update has been made. ;-)

Wow, July 13th was my last post. Two and half months later, I wanted to give you folks some news.

As mentioned before, I am addressing most of the concerns although it still will be a long way before it gets approved just for graphics.

So, folks stay tuned.
