In the US, where the tax is seperated you can tip on just the meal if you wish. In many places, tax is just included so tipping on the overall total is just easier.bedub1 wrote:If my bill is $100, and there is a 10% tax rate, then my bill is $110. If I want to tip %20, do I tip $20, or $22? Do you tip on the tax?
What if the bill is $100 and the the tax rate is 50%. Now your total is $150. Do you tip $20, or do you tip $180?
if you get really bad service it's customary to leave a tip of one penny. this is apparently to let the server know that you didn't forget, you just fucking hate themkarel wrote:I only tip if the service is good![]()

that said, stiffing someone making less than minimum wage is kind of a dick move even with bad service, so tip anyway unless the server is truly evil or something
the quality of food has nothing to do with the waiter and once again even with bad service it's good to remember that the guy serving you has a shitty, shitty job with awful paykarel wrote:SultanOfSurreal wrote:if you get really bad service it's customary to leave a tip of one penny. this is apparently to let the server know that you didn't forget, you just fucking hate themkarel wrote:I only tip if the service is good![]()

I would never tip if sevice is bad....it's only fair......if i go out to eat and the food is crap and poor service, don't you think it's kinda stupid to tip??????
Here's my feeling:bedub1 wrote:If my bill is $100, and there is a 10% tax rate, then my bill is $110. If I want to tip %20, do I tip $20, or $22? Do you tip on the tax?

I disagree with you about the "so tip anyway"...I'm sorry, but if they're that bad at their job, then they need to work harder at it. If they want a better wage, they should be willing to work to get it (just as I do).SultanOfSurreal wrote:if you get really bad service it's customary to leave a tip of one penny. this is apparently to let the server know that you didn't forget, you just fucking hate themkarel wrote:I only tip if the service is good![]()

I kind of agree with you on this, but I look at it on more of a case by case basis. If I get poor service at a restaurant from someone who obviously doesn't care, or isn't even trying, or isn't nice at all, or even is actually an asshole, then I won't tip (or I'll pull the small change tip gag). But I've gotten poor service where the waitstaff were simply inexperienced or short-staffed and overwhelmed by too many customers and it's not really their fault. I'll leave a minimal but decent tip in that case. Or even if it is their fault but it's clear that they at least are trying to do a good job or even just acknowledge their poor service by being apologetic, I'll still give them a small but reasonable tip.Woodruff wrote:I disagree with you about the "so tip anyway"...I'm sorry, but if they're that bad at their job, then they need to work harder at it. Actually, I think you have it the wrong way around. Their minimum wage is so low that they require tips to earn a 'decent' income.Night Strike wrote:You should always tip; just let the degree of service determine how much. Waiters and waitresses require tips in order to get their pay. That's why they have a lower minimum wage than normal.
Then the CEO has clearly too much money and is a capitali$t pig scum, and thus, must be dealt with accordinglyxelabale wrote:What if a CEO contributes more than 10 times the worth of the minimum wage to the company?
Is that was I was referring to when I quoted you? No, it wasn't. If service is absolutely horrid, you should leave a one penny tip, like it was said before. However, you have to look at the situation, see StiffMittens post. The fact is, any waiter would take a better job if it was possible, if they could, but that isn't exactly always the case. It's not like they can just walk into an office building and get a new job.karel wrote:hecter wrote:Congratulations on not having any real grasp on how the world works.karel wrote:Lmao well he can always get a new job if his job is so shitty
I think i do,but go ahead and tip for shitty service...as for i refuse

No, waiters rely on their tip for pretty much their whole income. My father has been a waiter for a number of years, and he doesn't even factor in his actual hourly wage into how much he makes in a day. It was a good day if he made lots of tips, and that's it. You cannot survive on simply the lower-than-minimum wage you are given as a waiter.radiojake wrote:Actually, I think you have it the wrong way around. Tipping's a disgrace. It allows the owner to exploit the worker into accepting lower basic wages. The practice should be outlawed. Obviously the wages of the staff should be increased to a decent level that allows an acceptable standers of living. Paying tips just lets the employer off the hook.Night Strike wrote:You should always tip; just let the degree of service determine how much.
