I think you really must be insulated by suburban life with your only outlets being cable tv and corporate culture.

I really wish I could introduce you to the people who openly say they don't like Obama because he's black, and talk about how he has to be removed from office, then turn the conversation to the birther thing with the attention to detail of someone really, really emotionally invested in the outcome.

I wish I could introduce you to those people, but I never seek them out again when I listen to them, and I often end up insulting them thoroughly enough that they never want anything more to do with me either.

It's not a salacious counter-accusation. Simply put, it has been clear to me from the drop, when then-candidate Obama threw his hat into the ring, that when a person disagreed with the man, they would be labelled a racist. President Obama's campaign did it successfully to Hillary Clinton in the primary. They didn't need to use it with McCain. They are absolutely using it now. Is President Obama behind it? Of course not, but his supporters certainly are.

When major news networks that I used to respect use a broad brush to label tea party protestors racist, there's a problem. When major news pundits, celebrities, and ex-presidents label everyone who doesn't want universal healthcare as racists, there's a problem. I don't like my own arguments being marginalized because people can point to some racist asshole who has a problem with the president's race and say, "There look, I think people don't like the president because he's black." It's like in the Ludacris thread - I labelled two guys as racists because they don't like Ludacris's lyrics. It was a joke.

Are there racists? Yes. Do they hate the president because he's black? Yes. Are the 56% who are against universal healthcare racist? No. Are they being labelled racists? F$cking-a right they are.

And my claim about racism doesn't go backwards, the way yours does, I'm saying that every admitted racist I've met has also been a birther. In my accusation, the racism goes the other direction.

The healthcare hubbub has more to do with the conflict between the haves and have nots, and how fear of change is used to easily manipulate the feeble minded into fearing reform.
