Favorite Movie Soundtrack?

Post by thegreekdog »

What is your favorite movie soundtracks? Please choose a more modern music soundtrack (for example, something with rock, rap, etc.) and a more classical sound track.

Modern music - Judgment Night soundtrack (original songs performed by "popular" rock and rap artists from the 90s)

Classical - The Last of the Mohicans (makes me want to kill redcoats)

"Modern" = The Rocky Horro Picture Show

"Classical" = Clockwork Orange

Maybe trainspotting for modern and apocalypse now for classic.

Tough question.

I am a sucker for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack as well, there is just something about their various adaptations of classic songs.

Well, I'm not sure if all the music is technically "modern" but I love Kill Bill's.

And if that doesn't count then I'd have to go with Mortal Kombat, the greatest modern theme song of any other movie in my opinion.

Classical is a tad more difficult, but I'd have to go with Lord of the Rings.

Sadly, I love the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack off of the 90s, and more recently Into the Wild - Eddie Vedder rocks.

Classically, hmmmmmm. Maybe The Sting (not classical, so sue me). I love that ragtime!

I quite like the Lord of the Rings soundtracks, especially Gollum's Song (Two Towers credit song, so sad yet so awesome)

Modern has got to be This is Spinal Tap. Very original.

Original classical is a difficult one. I'd probably go for Out of Africa. As for pre-existing classical then its Amadeus. All answers are subject to change. :D

I'm a fan of the scores of both the new Transformers movies. It's just the right balance of edgy but not too engaging that I can listen to it as background noise while I'm programming or working on some school work. I used to use the scores from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but sometimes found myself getting caught up in the music a little too much.

Modern: "A Knight's Tale" The cool juxtaposition of modern tracks with medieval settings was unsettling at first, but oddly pleasing on subsequent viewings. Plus, the tracks selected are amazing.
Modern Runner up: "The Highlander" A bit dated now, but awesome at the time.

Classical: "Star Wars" John Williams is the man.
Classical runner up: Danny Elfman soundracks I like quite well also. He doesn't get much credit, but has some awesome work out there. The new Batman stuff is pretty cool, good especially for listening at work when trying to drown out the hubub. Create a Danny Elfman channel on Pandora and you get to hear some pretty interesting stuff.

In terms of movies that were scored, the top of the list is definitely Last of the Mohicans. I actually love the soundtracks to any Michael Mann movie.

runners up:

Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
Terminator

movies that had a collection of songs that worked perfectly: Heat

runners up:

City of God
Kids
Collateral
Natural Born Killers
Timecode
The Insider
Strange Days
24 Hour Party People
The Departed
Donnie Darko

honorable mention:
Man on Fire (because of the adaptive reuse of the parts from the Nine Inch Nails songs 'The Mark Has Been Made' and 'The Wretched', as well as some b-sides and other songs used for this underrated masterpiece.)

sorry, it's impossible to pick just one with so many of these things. The Crow was a great soundtrack, but most of the songs weren't even in the movie. Like the Romeo + Juliet OST was good too, but the only the Radiohead song was really in it.

Good list pimp.

Here's my "full" list (in no particular order):

Star Wars (original and new)
Lord of the Rings
The Departed
The Last of the Mohicans
The Crow
The Crow II (Korn - "Sean Olson")
Judgment Night
The Matrix
Romeo + Juliet (Des'Ree - "Kissing You")
End of Days
Go (back when I was into the techno thing)

Dammit, I was totally thinking I would be able to nab Amadeus. Overbreeding, and the like.

Tenacious D: Pick of Destiny.

That one caught me off guard.

That has to be one of the worst edited modern movies ever. The director sucked balls. He cut out some amazingly important scenes. Watching the film with the scenes intact, the film makes a lot more sense. And is almost.... GOOD.

Don't know which version I watched. It was more about the D than serious plot progression, anyways.

It's all about the D.

How about soundtracks that sucked but for one song? Like Godzilla. Only the Rage song was good. Or that sick Roots track on Bait.

I didn't really like the End of Days soundtrack, except for that awesome Everlast song (which is actually the only song of his I have. That song should have been in Gus van Sant's Elephant, not End of Days.

Here's an example of how awesome Michael Mann is. He always includes these mini music videos. This is cinematic perfection:
