I have just been informed in a PM by the Provost of a certain University in Canada that China was invented at McGill University in 1865.

And tell the rest of your McGill classmates to stop making up history all the time.
Baseball was not invented in New York. The first kid that picked up a rock and a stick, and hit the rock with the stick, invented baseball. So it was probably invented back in like 1000 bc.

By Greeks. They played naked, per usual.

You have told us several times that Greek men played their games "naked." You seem to be stuck on this point.

If by several you mean twice, then yes, several.

I like to preempt any homophobic jokes about Greeks by making homophobic jokes about Greeks.

That is your argument? A big picture that says "wrong"? Clever you are.
Did you know that basketball was actually invented by a Canadian working in the US?
I never went to McGill...but do enjoy Canadian history.

Football's roots date to 1827 when Harvard University Sophomores challenged the Freshmen. There were almost no rules, and the whole of each class played the other. Still, it was played with a pigskin ball. It became a Harvard tradition.
In 1860 the "Bloody Monday" game lead to football being banned by the University.
No one for sure knows when or where the first football-type game was played.
The ANCIENT GREEK version was called Harpaston. The Romans took it of course.
In the 12th century many rival Irish towns played annual games against each other on Shrove Tuesday.
King Richard II tried to ban the game, and failed.
"Rugby Rules" football got its start in 1823 when William Web Ellis cheated by running with the ball in his hands, to score before the game clock ran out. It was a pretty immediate hit, and soon Rugby had it's own egg shaped ball, which was easier to carry. Though Rugby traveled to all corners of the British Empire, in AMERICA it was still largely unknown.
By the 1800s Most Eastern University's had their own versions of football, played with local rules. This is why no school played another until 1869 when Princeton played Rutgers for the first time. It was the nation's first intercollegiate football (soccer) game. Columbia and Yale soon started playing too.
IN 1871 HARVARD lifted it's ban on Football. They played their own version known as "the Boston Game." Players could pick up, run with, and pass the ball - all with their hands.
IN 1874 McGill University's Rugby team challenged Harvard to a three game series. They played the Boston Game. Harvard won the first game 3 - 0. The next day they played rugby. The game was a tie of 0, even though Harvard had never even seen a Rugby game before. Finally Harvard requested to play Rugby for their third game in Canada. Harvard won again.
Harvard abandoned "the Boston Game" for Rugby.
in 1875 Yale challenges and looses a game of Rugby to Harvard. Even with modified rules, and swelling crowds of fans. Yale switches to Rugby in 1876. Princeton invites Yale, Columbia, and Harvard to form an intercollegiate Football Association to draw up uniform rules.
Walter Camp, the father of American Football, played for Yale from 1877-1882. He served on every rules committee from 1878-1925. As a coach for Yale his final record was 67-2
The first truly recognizable Football games were Walter Camps creations. The firsts being played in 1880 when the concepts of "Possession" and a "Quarterback" were added to the game. Still, there was no limit to the time a team could posses a ball, unless they fumbled or scored points. in 1881 Princeton wasted the first half of a game just holding onto the ball. Yale did the same in the second half. Fans were outraged.
One of them wrote a letter to a paper asking "why not limit possession to 4 consecutive scrimmages. Someone sent the letter to Walter Camp, who added the "downs" system to keep from punishing a team that was putting their possession to good use. In 1882 the system was adopted along with Camp's other idea to chalk the field with lines 5 yards apart.
In 1884 Touchdown value was raised above Field Goal's.
In 1888 tackling below the waist was made legal, and blocking "with extended arms" was made Illegal.
Football helmets were not mandatory until 1939. By the mid 1890s the sport was so violent that injury reports were included as part of regular sports coverage.
In 1893 the Tippecanoe County District attorney interrupted a football game threatening to arrest and charge every player with assault and battery. The Departments of Army and Navy abolished their annual game.In 1894 the ball was newly required to travel 10 yards after kickoff unless touched by an opposing team member.
The "Big 10 Conference" formed in 1895. This is the beginning of the end of unchecked violence in football. By 1897 teams were popping up at schools across the country.
In 1904 21 people died playing Football. Another 23 died in 1905. In the middle of this season PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT, an avid football fan, ordered the sport cleaned up.In 1905 a scandal broke wherein it became known that Walter Camp had a secret fund to "coddle" his star athletes. This was illegal in the sport, and Walter Camp himself endorsed the rule. He also paid himself a better salary than Yale's professors made. Because of the scandal and violence, In December of 1905 thirteen schools broke from Walter Camp's football organization. In 1906 the two groups merged, and Walter Camp was finally pushed aside. In 1910 they changed their name to NCAA. In 1906, hoping to cut down on violence in football, the "forward pass" was finally legalized. Resistance to the forward pass was fierce, and as such, the smaller less-established football programs of the West and Midwest were the first to become proficient at it.in 1906 St. Louis University played a perfect season using the forward pass. Yet none of the Eastern teams noticed.
By 1909 another 33 people died playing the sport, so another round of rules came. the most important and recognizable being the institution of 4 fifteen-minute "quarters." Some restrictions on forward passing were also lifted.
In 1912 the final round of major changes occurred, including the removal of most restrictions on forward passing. Most major teams still ignored it until 1913.
On November 1, 1913 Nortre Dame challenged West Point to a football game. After practicing all summer, Nortre Dame went on to win 35-13. At that time, few schools had ever even heard of Notre Dame Football... This David and Goliath game changed the face of football forever... though very little has changed since then.

My balls. Look at them. NORTH WINS OVER THE SOUTH AND CANADA.
