Two maps of the same area in the Foundry?

Post by natty dread »

OK, just want to know what's the procedure in cases like this?

Currently there's in Gameplay workshop my Nordic countries map, and another map of Scandinavia that was in the bin when I started working on my map.

So what's the deal here, will the Foundry allow two maps with almost identical areas (altought with different gameplay and graphics) or will one of the maps need to step down? And if so, how is it decided which gets to be quenched? The one who makes it through first? Some sort of competition?

Before I continue development on my map, I'd like all the facts and rules to be made clear. I've done lots of work on my map and I wouldn't like it all going to waste.

There are about 6 maps of America... about 5 of Europe... and 3 of the Age of Realms...

If both maps are good enough to be on the site - then they both shall be.

Not to be a giant pessimist... but in all likely reality one of the mapmakers won't complete the map. More likely both won't.

When i tried a Japan map, someone else besides RedBaron was working on one and habitually said I stole his Japan idea or something. When I started 13 Colonies, someone else did a Revolutionary war map and made a point of noting the lack of conflict between us ect. because the maps were different.

My motto is, just keep working on your map.

Helix - has some fair points here...

Get your map into the Forge before you worry about any of this!!

Indeed, I have already contacted the other mapmaker and we seem to have a good understanding between us, we're trying to cooperate and plan together to develop both our maps in different directions, so that both maps will be sufficiently unique and distinct from each other, to justify making both maps.

So I guess this thread can be closed, but thanks to all of you for your answers & comments!

Cooperation is always a good method---either working together on 1 project, or figuring out how to make two similar projects more unique, which is what it seems you have done! :)

Lol, was it your map? Ironically we both ended up abandoning our maps. Case in point I guess :P

Well, I'm not abandoning my map until the foundry mods come up and tell me straight to my face, "natty, your maps suck and you should never do anything again, just give it up" :D

It was InkL0sed, I remember seeing it. I made sure to message him to ask if he was going to keep going at some point. (I didn't see IH's and didn't know he tried at about the same time... ) He disappeared, and I never heard back.

I started my Jamaica map, and did not realize that cairns already had a Jamaica map going. I told him that I would just go ahead and can mine. He said that he had no objections if I went ahead on it. I did, but it seemed that some others DID have objections.

Just something to think about. ;)

IMHO, I believe the guidelines are clear on this matter.
You just need to have a substantial uniqueness, that separates your map from any other that might be of the same subject matter. IE: game play, style etc.

Most maps will allow for multiple variations, if you can be creative enough. Some are easy... others not so much.

Jamaica falls under that category. 1 map for such a small country will be more than enough, unless you can make another one be REALLY unique. Part of it is that Jamaica itself doesn't have a lot of history behind it. Areas of vast, well known histories will always have a chance to become a map.

For Japan there are at least 2 more maps you could pull out of it without batting an eye and you probably wouldn't run into a lot of uniqueness opposition.

Feudal Japan
Japanese Empire WWII

Beyond these it'd get much harder to stay unique, but not impossible.

This reminds me... For some time I've been toying with the idea of making a map of the Dan-no-ura battle... the deciding battle of the genpei war. However I would need someone with a little more history knowledge to help me with the project.

Right, one could even do "Major Cities of Japan"---Japan has lots of possibilities.

There have been many many Japan maps attempted, you were the first to succeed!

Ah yeah, I remember Inkcl0sed's map, it was really quite nice but I think it got caught up on trains or no trains, inset of Tokyo or no inset, ect. I'm glad RedBaron is making a Japan map though, looking forward to it.
