This Forum Needs a Top Ten Movies Thread

Ok. That's two votes to (or three) to Apocalypse Now! so I'm changing the list. I think I've seen 2 votes for different versions of startrek o stardust o starwars whatever they are called :PP ;

Funny story: I had never seen them because I was confused as to which watch first and all.. so I bought the whole pack of Starwars movies. I set up my home theater again, which is a PITA with all the cables and boxes for the back speakers, and hoped a super adventure. Meh. I think I sort of enjoyed 1 movie, don't even cared to remember the name o number of the six. Natalie Portman was the peak of that weakend.

About what 44 said, do you agree to keep this to a one list of 10 movies or should we make two list, a top 21 of modern movies and a top ten of classic movies?

Chalk me up as the 3rd for The Princess Bride. And while Heath Ledger was excellent in The Dark Knight, it was not one of my favorites. Also, never seen The Departed.

I also enjoyed Casablanca, Citizen Kane, but don't know how I feel them to be in another category.

Meh, I was going to do a big post full of mispelings for fun, but I guess I should leave it. The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my favourites for a few reasons. I don't really think it's one of the best of all time, but it does stand out for me personally.

But I do need to add one thing- if you've not seen Casablanca, The Third Man, or Citizen Kane, then you need to take a break and watch at least one of them. Come back and say that they're crap, but don't come back and say that you couldn't watch them because they were old.

I've seen Casablanca and Citizen Kane. Both are excellent movies, but I just don't know how to compare them to the modern movies. I don't even know what I mean, I just would like to see them in a small movie theater by myself and not have to think about them or say anything to anybody about them. It's kind of a different experience.

Lately, with many exceptions, we've seen a lot of good movies coming from Hollywood. Movies that won't make it to a top 10 perhaps, but overall they are quite good. What do you tell me of The Hurt Locker and how do you compare it to Citizen Kane?

Why the hate for 2001? Yeah it's wierd and there are a lot of loose ends, but it's a visual masterpiece with unique storytelling. And since we're on Kubrick, Strangelove is post-60, as is Good, Bad, and Ugly. Personally, I think 70-on would be a better divide with equal sized lists, but I also think we should just make a top 40 of all of them. I feel a poll is in order.

-I've been reminded of how awesome a movie The Shootist is, made all the more poignant by being The Duke's swan song.

-I'm shocked this hasn't been mentioned yet, but I feel like a dunce for not mentioning it either: The Wizard of Oz!

-Memento should drop a bit. It's a clever idea and well made, but upon reflection, the whole thing is rather pointless and you can't fully trust any of the characters to tell the truth.

-Princess Bride is not deserving to be on this list. Yeah, it's funny the first few times, but overall, it's probably one of the most overrated movies I know.

-I second Toy Story for being a technological achievement and an all-around good movie besides.

no no and no. I will not add Requiem for a Dream to the list. I've discussed this with many people, that is not art. that movie is disgusting.

On the subject of Princess Bride I have said this before and no doubt I will say it again. This is an absolutley unique work of art. People often say (of any title) "I saw the movie, I liked it, but I found the book unreadable" or alternatively "I loved the book - the movie was disapointing". Princess Bride cannot be appreciated in total until you have both read the book and seen the movie.It is a story about storytelling, which cannot be fully appreciated until you have read the book, seen the movie, and appreciated the differences between them and the original book by S. Morgenstern.

I will not attempt to point out which parts of the above paragraph are true and which are spoilers.
