Genghis Khant wrote:Here's a bit of a twist to this topic; a film which most people hate, because it is crap, but which I love is The Postman. A film so rubbish, so buttock clenchingly piss poor, that it transcends all its intended seriousness and becomes a comedy.

It's possibly the worst film I've ever seen, and the first 50 minutes or so is a total waste of time. Fast forward it till the bit where a man gets eaten by a lion, that's my advice.

The acting really sucks. If Keanu Reeves was in this movie he'd steal the show. Top Petty is in it for christ's sake, "You're the postman? I've heard of you. Man, you're famous." The plot and the script are terrible and the premise - Kevin Costner rebuilds the United States from its post apocalyptic ashes by delivering letters - is totally absurd. It had a huge budget, millions of dollars, filmed with armies of extras (some of them in lead roles  ), impressive panoramic helicopter shots, explosions, pitched battles, hundreds of horses, a true epic. It's over the top, it's Hollywood turned up to 11. It's so bad, and yet it's so good.

Cheesier than a ripe camembert, there's just one question you have to ask yourself, "how many letters can a dead postman deliver?"

I agree with you as well. I, for some reason, loved that movie.

I just have one I could think of...

Click.

That movie sucked, and the retards that said it made them cry at the ending? they need to go kill themselves.

That was the funniest part of the movie when he died. I couldn't help myself from laughing he sounded like he did in Little Nicky. lol

I don't believe "Click" is considered a classic.

If it features Adam Sandler and is not happy gilmore, it is not a classic. That's the rule. I love Bill Murray so much, for evidence of why you should all see osmosis jones and The Royal Tannenbaums.

Movies that are canon that shouldn't be: Raging Bull, I <3 fucking pretentious wannabe masterpiece roasted shit on a pseudointellectual stick "we-have-Dustin-Hoffman-so-we're-deep" Huckabees" absolute tripe. The movie itself would have been ok if they hadn't been so extremely overblownly highhorsy and pretentious. Grrr... Also, f*ck the emperor's club, and all those breakfast club movies.

Books: I do think the bible is overrated, and the old testament in its various forms. It is the number one seller every year though. A million little pieces was not a good book, and though I realize it wasn't true and that was what made it good etc, it was so trivial, Considering that book as literature is like considering Michael Jackson or Paris Hilton legitimate news.

I have to say i can't stand any of those old Alfred Hitchcock movies. Ya I know he was one of the greatest hooror film directors but i really don't find his work that great so i would say he is HIGHLY overrated.

It's difficult to appreciate his work if you're raised solely on modern horror which is all gore and shock-cuts.

Actually I am quite a fan of the older phsycological horrors. I have to say modern movies have become so corrupt with sex drugs and voilence you can barely ever find anything good. The last good movie i went to see had to be Rocky Balboa. I just feel that Hitchcock was sketchy and sloppy.

A different take

Post by luns101 »

I know this thread is about overrated films, but just wanted to interject another thought. I really love Quentin Terrentino's films. (Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill movies in particular). His soundtracks for the films are awesome as well. Anyone else out there like Terrentino's works?

OK, another contribution to this thread:

Overrated films - anything produced by M. Night Shyamalan in the last 4 years.

I like Tarantino's films, but I thought that Kill Bill was a steaming heap of manure. But, having said that, I'm well into kung fu films and Asian cinema in general (especially Hong Kong cinema), so I couldn't help comparing it to the films it was trying to copy (& re-brand for western audiences).

My first boyfriend ever told me that this book sucked, so I subconsciously had a prejudice against it for years. Last summer, I saw a copy of it for cheap and bought it, thinking I'd give it a whirl, challenge my assumptions. It's not the BEST written piece of literature, and I can understand that it doesn't adhere to contemporary sensibilities of what an entertaining book is, but it's awesome and genius and moving and shocking, and I loved it. Of course it's awesome, and of course I loved it, and I should have known. My first boyfriend was HOLDEN CAULFIELD, and why would I ever consider taking HOLDEN CAULFIELD's taste in literature seriously?

Ouch, that's harsh I hate both sexes equally.

Joking, no, I know the kind of person you're talking about I think, and I'm not him, I hate him just as much as I hate women. :P

I'll give that the awakening's an important book in terms of history and what it said, but I don't think it's well written, and I don't think Chopin states Edna's case well enough. I think she undermines what she's trying to say in the way she constructs Edna's character.

But, just for kicks

Personally, I thought Shyamalan & Tarantino both did great stuff in their first couple of films, then went fast downhill afterwards. I haven't even bothered with Kill Bill, or Shyamalan's latest, which I've forgotten the name of. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure Kill Bill is stuffed with superficially clever dialogue and loads of pop-culture references, while Shyamalan's latest has some stupid twist at the end. I just don't feel like sitting through it.

Actually, Shyamalan's DIDN'T have a twist at the end, that's why it was cool. It was a fairy tale, which no one expected. Although it got crushed by the critics, and didn't last long in theaters, I enjoyed it more than most of his other stuff.
