Also, the Super Mario Party games are the best Marios IMO (aside from MarioKart). Forgot about those.

1) Grand theft Auto : San Andreas - Greatest game there will ever be.

2)Fifa 10 - Greatest football game to date.

3)Tekken - The best fighting game in the beginning of the console era.

4)Grand theft Auto IV - Not quite the same as San Andreas but still an awsome game.

5)Need For Speed : underground - One of the best racing games.

Are you talking about the FIFA South Africa version?

I can't believe so many people are talking about MarioKart, yet no one has mentioned the SNES version. Much better game, in my opinion. It's the only one where skill takes precedence over which items you get from the boxes.

How come Chrono Trigger hasn't made a single list yet? I pretty much fell in love with that game within 15 minutes. Unlike a lot of other RPGs you get the actual feeling that you can make choices, not as in Mass Effect where "choices" only result in a minor change to the plotline before the story progresses exactly as it would have anyway. Unlike pretty much ever other RPG you don't feel silly for doing sidequests and ignoring the main quest because every sidequest is somehow relevant and actually impacts the game, the pressure on you to finish the main quest because OMGTEHWORLDZARENDING! is pretty much nonexistent. Yes, the end of the world is coming, but it's in no hurry to get to you just to wait around until you have finished every sidequest, the story explicitly allows the player to choose when they want to fight the big bad and ugly guy.

Halo has been mentioned a few times, and sure, Halo is nice, but it doesn't compare too well against Half-Life, HL1 set a new standard for first-person-shooters, regarding plot and immersion as well as physics. Halo1 picked up a few elements, but really didn't improve anything regarding the first two categories. I consider Halo to be a rip-off. Sure, the multiplayer mode may be fun and all, but as an overall game... nah.

Though I have not played the snes version, double dash has a ton of skill in it, the boxes matter, but they don't prevent you from winning (unlike the wii version). It's all about the drifting and sliding :)

I haven't played the SNES version, but I can assure you there's skill involved with the N64 and Wii versions of the game.

The wii version cversion just makes me mad because
a.) I don't own it
b.) I can't win very often often, probably because I"m used to double dash and n64, and the fact I don't own it it practice.
Those items piss me off royally though.

Right, but not nearly as much as the SNES version.

I can't speak for Double Dash, as the GameCube was an abomination, that almost killed Nintendo.

Haha, it's about knowing the shortcuts, knowing what items what to expect and being able to use them correctly. I know that I can pretty much beat my friends every time we play and I always placed in the top 3 everytime I played online.

The addition of the Bullet Bill item was annoying though. Pretty much a item to make the loser in last place feel better.

That's the biggest thing. IN the 64, and wii versions, the worst driver tends to get rewarded heavily by the items, especially in later laps. I know they're just making things more balanced, and it works well, but it makes the game less about skill than the SNES version.

My five:

Shenmue: I only got a few hours into this game before my Dreamcast went kaput, but this game is absolutely incredible just from the tone that it sets. I'm sure if I got farther in I could only give it more praise.
Left 4 Dead: A modern classic if there ever was one. Unique enemies, creepy environments, and likable characters with a dark sense of humor all make for some memorable moments and a great game that the sequel just can't match up to.
Super Mario Bros. 3: Edges out Super Mario World for being the first game I ever played and because Raccoon Mario > Cape Mario any day.
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker: *puts up flame shield* It's better than OoT, IMO. I like the artwork and I actually enjoy the sailing segments.
Pokémon (main series): No need to differentiate. Even I acknowledge they're basically all the same. That's part of what makes it great: they've stuck to their guns. And that cute exterior belies a very complex and competitive game.

You say this, and yet nintendo still made profits from it and all the games; they are by far the most intelligent game company out there. Even their failures can make more money than the best other places have to offer.

It's the shortcuts that kill me, and the fact that I have no idea what the course has to offer, so I'm driving blind most of the time.

I also have a theory as to how to get good items from the boxes, or at least increased odds. Also, there is a power boost option with the toggle stick, its not a difficult move, but doing it correctly against someone who is struggling to time it is another challenging concept of skill. I didnt like the Wii version

I can't believe only one person has mentioned Super Smash Bros. The first one is the best in my humble opinion. It's one of those games that just gets more and more fun as you (and your friends - having friends who are also good is a requirement) get better.

While I did own a N64, before this year I only RARELY played Super Smash Brothers games (when I'd go to a friend's house and stuff). But since I lived next to a kid that had SSB: Brawl on the Wii this year...I have to admit I was hooked. And, a lot of the time we didn't ACTUALLY play the game (have Captain Falcon or Ganondorf do their "rape" attacks on Squirtle, pause it and look at Squirtle's face...it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen), but when we did legitimately played, it was so fun.

Among the best 5 I've ever played? Nah. But God damn is it fun.

Hmmm, gonna have to go with:

Mario Kart 64
Goldeneye
Civilization 2
Final Fantasy 3 (or 6, depending on which side of the Pacific you're on)
GTA San Andreas

Honorable mention to Super Mario Galaxy, Ocarina of Time, the original Command and Conquer, and any given Madden for the PS2.

I know, not the most original list. I'm not the world's most expansive gamer.

In no particular order

Call of Duty 4/6 - COD 4 was better IMO but these are the only console games I play regularly anymore.
Age of Empires 2/3 - Great rts games with good gameplay
Rise of Nations - So brilliantly complicated there is always more to learn
Mario Kart for N-64 - At school me and a few floor-mates play one circuit a day on average, to many heartbreaking losses and thrilling victories to count.
Super Smash Bros - Another great game i play often at school.
