I have a variation of the classic map we use when I play Risk with my friends. We connect Argentina to Eastern Austraila with what we call the Balcolm Neck Bridge and make South America's Bonus 3. Then we play that East Africa is not connected to the Middle East. These changes make Africa defendable and Australia less of an invincable fortress.
i dont think its totally worthless, but what do i know. It would make for an intersting change, but oyu could basicly reguritate the classic map in any more, just add those connection and changes if thats what you want.
Eh. I've never been right in the foundry, so i've probably just doomed you.
"Did you fortify New Guinea or are you just happy to see me?"
We may not "need" two classic maps, but it certainly wouldn't hurt the site. The fact is that I have played this way and it works well and it wouldn't be much work to make

Earth w/ antarctica is a better way to do the same thing.
I think its a pretty good idea. If we attach the two, even though it is a simple variation, it would change the game alot. Suddenly you can't just build up siam, you now have to defend both siam and western australia. And if you control this "Balcom Neck Bridge", your able to take south america and australia, suddenly getting a 5 man bonus instead of a 2 man bonus while sitting in australia...it essentially prevents the turtleshelling in austrailia. If east africa is not connected to the middle east, it makes africa not so much of a death trap...now africa is a 3 man bonus with only 2 borders...Just my 2 cents...
Since Australia can be so pivotal, I think the small change is actually quite a big one. But similar maps with tiny differences aren't so hot, not because the differences aren't interesting, but because you can accomplish the same thing plus a whole lot more by setting the variant interrelation in a new setting. Every map is just a bunch of territories connected by paths to some others, and whether you make the connection from Australia to Argentina or from the bowling alley to the police station on a map of Springfield doesn't matter for the gameplay, but it sure will make people a lot more enthusiastic if it's something that looks new.
I understand your frustration with the reaction in this thread, especially when it may not interest you to start from scratch rather than put a few new attack paths on the existing map. But this can be a tough crowd just because there are so many variants on this site of the dynamics of the classic map that have the added element of a different image to keep players amused.
If we want to change the classic map we should make it like it is in the computer game "Risk 2". They have new zealand which is connected to Eastern Australia and Argentina (there is your link to Australia via South America), Falkland Islands which connect Argentina to Africa, Hawaii which connects Japan and Western US, Svalbard which connects Scandnavia to North America and the Phillipines which connects Japan to Indonesia. If this change occurs however, tweaking will need to be made to the continent bonuses.
Hello Long time player first time caller. with the subject of turtleshelling australia having come up ill put in my two cents. ive played games were turtleshelling australia is the only good strategy at the time because you had the luck to be spread out everywhere and some lucky guy gets all but 1 country in europe and another gets africa and south america and your left with nothing but australia. so what else are you to do but bide your time and hole up with the kangaroos.
I like the idea of a new variation of the Classic Map. I'm not a fan of a whole new map with tiny changes, but I think to completely re-do the world map from scratch would be pretty awesome. If no one is doing this at some point I think I might give it a try.

I actually think it would be great if somebody did a from-zero graphic of the classic map to support this variation - the classic version on this site didn't come from the community/foundry, and I don't actually like it very much, though obviously a great deal of skill went into it, so I think a Classic II map alongside the existing classic wouldn't be as out of place as it would be if someone wanted to do another Africa map. But I'd like to hear from Lack/Andy on this, as a doppelganger map would be something of a departure from the norm, and before anyone put any effort into it it would be good to know that it would actually go up on the site.
I've been following this post closely for a while, remaining on the outside as spectator.
---First off I'll say only changing a few routes in the Classic map and trying to pass it off as a new map wouldn't fly like a purely lead airplane.
---Though, I will say if someone took the time and energy to completely re-do the Classic map, and change it so it is inherently unique (I.E. not a copy in both artwork and total layout (obviously there would be some repetition)) would suffice as a 'new map'. Perhaps many things could be improved upon, or the distribution of countries to continents could be changed. But I would have to stress again that it be different and not simply a 'Classic Rehash'. It should look and feel and play like its own map, not some ugly twin sister of the Classic. I could see someone giving this a shot, though it would have to be clear from the Foundry that it is different. Even if a great map is created and ready to be added to the site, if the Foundry doesn't feel like it has changed much, it probably won't make it up. If it gets the Foundry backing and Brand, it could work. But it might be a long road ahead.
Based on the fact, that its played more than any other map.
The biggest amount of work required on the classic map is the following:
The game play options
This has been mentioned in the suggestions several times before..
What i mean is, if you start your attack from say Argentina - the drop down menu of territories to choose to attack should show only Peru & Brazil.
I know this is nothing to do with the map being re drawn, but if someone does undertake the mk2 version, the above point should be high on your to do list when making it.
Also - Add New Zealand, keep the one entry point and 2 armies bonus - just make it harder to get hold off in the first place.
Doing exactly what is said above has been considered before. But I believe lack mentioned it would slow down things heavily, due to each time you select a country a special list would have to uploaded.
If someone would add the extra countries .....Hawaii , Phillippines, faulken especially..... I often play that board and it makes things very interesting
only thing is, is that I would need an AWESOME program to make it in...not a bad one (cough cough inkscape cough cough)...what is the general consensus for the best program to use (thats free!)
