Wow, AoG, you really pick the hard questions. I think a lot of the answers have nothing to do with each other. (That’s the way things are, the things you think are related are not, and the things that are not obviously related are.)
So let’s get to the subject of the female anatomy. (Yes there is a female anatomy, although that’s not always obvious to centuries of male medical students.) Through a complex interplay of apathy and prudishness, the fact that organs aren’t “missing” in one gender compared to another, they are just “different” gets ignored. You don’t even see research into the female equivalent of the male prostate gland until the 20th century.
Next is the subject of the F bomb. Although the bomb is no longer a bomb in the UK, the origin of the vulgar meaning of the word comes clearly from the French (I mean the Normans). A lot of “English” words were given low class status by the French speaking Normans.
Next is “shit” or the kiddies F bomb. No really, for most pre-sexual children, the number 2 is the source of all (wink wink) jokes. Everyone does it but you never discuss it … except in a joke.
We wear clothes because it gets really damn cold. I mean I never understand women; they always complain they are too cold when it’s damn obvious why. (The answer is, by the way, naked necks. Two of your biggest veins run right near the skin. Now the solution “cover the neck” while leaving the cleavage exposed might be a little tricky, but that’s why fashion made scarves.)
The notion of the exposed breast being naughty is a relatively recent thing. Then again, so is the bra and bikini. Go figure. Man boobs have generally gone under the radar, although back in the pre-bikini days, men did wear tops with their bathing suits.
Oh and it’s a closely kept secret (guys aren’t the only ones who are attracted to boobs, but they are the only ones who are attracted to them without having any of their own). I’m going to go with the “blame the bra” theory. P.S. last time I checked, there was a small but growing voice among medical researchers suggesting that bras are bad for you.
