laptop help

Post by LindsayRulez! »

I have a gateway computer that I bought 2 years ago.It will no longer charge. I have been told by a friend that the cord is not the problem, the problem is that something has come loose.

Help!

Does the light on your charger come on when it is plugged into an outlet? If not, it's the charger. If the charger works but the computer does not charge or hold a charge, then your motherboard in it may be messed up. Not sure what your friend thinks has come loose.

My girlfriend had the same problem... it was the charger that went for her.. i wouldnt go as far as say its ur motherboard... it is more likely the charger or the battery in ur laptop needs replacing.. have u tried popping out the battery out and putting it back in? sometimes it wiggles and doesnt make a proper connection to charge...

Vamp's probably right. For me, it was my motherboard, but a lot more was wrong with the laptop so if there's a lot more weirdness then besides the inability to charge, it may be that, but definitely do the simpler things first.

I have this problem with my laptop now and I believe the battery is fried. It works if it's plugged in, but it goes into critical battery hibernation if unplugged for more than a minute. This seems a bit more tech-related than the thread about your car problem, so I'm moving this to Q&A.

Moved.

Well here's what I think the best 3 culprits are:

1) Your power brick failed and can no longer convert AC to DC for your laptop to run.
2) Somewhere in your power cord a cable broke and it can no longer transfer enough electricity.
23 The battery itself can't hold a charge.

I'd bet more on a piece of copper in a wire breaking or a faulty power brick than an internal problem. Also it'd help if you could describe the issue a little more. Like they said above, take the battery out and put it back and and see if the connector to the power brick is secure.

There might also be what's sometimes called a 'static lock' in your computer. To fix that, you can power cycle.
Take out your battery and unplug your laptop, then hold your power button down on the computer for about 10 seconds. Almost everything else has been mentioned on here.

90% liklihood it's the battery.

Some of the cheap notebooks have really bad battery management... and it's gets especially bad quick if you typically use it plugged-in and don't let the battery cycle regularly.

Does the laptop run off the cord/charger and the battery doesn't charge?
or
Does the laptop fail to turn on since the battery is dead and the cord/charger won't provide power?
