sure the British empire was huge, I'm British, doesn't mean I'm proud of the fact that we colonised hundreds of countries, treating their residents like slaves, working for our own will, whilst white aristocrats back in england can reap the benefits and the rewards. Its the arrogant people that make me sick to even state that im of white British origin, and don't even get me started on America....

Of course this could turn into a huge debate where nobody is gonna c eye to eye on the issue.

I am half maltese and half english and i am proud of both my countries....Malta was a colonsied country that won the highest order that can be given to any country or human in time of war our peace (The George Cross).

The maltese paid a high price for helping the allies win the World War 2, it being the most bombed country in the war from the axis powers. But they still have huge respect for the english.

I really hope you're joking. Never made anybody slaves? Try looking in Africa from 16th century to the 18th century. The British were responsible for many of the greatest atrocities in the world, including heavily dealing in the African and Latin American slave trade, economically exploiting the vast majority of their colonies, completely ruining India's economic infrastructure by utterly destroying their textile industry through both one-way tariffs and outright looting... every country has its own fair share of dirty history, and I'm not denying that the British have made great strides in advancing human civilization, but you can't outright deny British slavery like it never happened or that all was fine and dandy in the colonies. The United States of America certainly didn't think they were being treated very well.

to add to the list of atrocities they imported opium to the the chinese against the laws of the current emperor, in order to build a nation full of addicts who would provide the british empire with cash. an equally awful version of slavery.
clarification though cless, the british colonies in NA didnt think they were being treated justly. at that point they werent yet the usa.

The problem is that history is history and it must be looked at in context. We cannot judge the bad things the British did in those days with today's mentality. It was a different world with different rules.

People tend to focus a lot on the bad things the British did, but the good things they did far outstrip the bad ones. And hey I live in Malta, a former colony. Then again I guess we were treated better than other colonies as we are Europeans.

Still the world must thank Britain every day for holding single handedly the Nazis at the start of World War II and basically losing its Empire in the process. It did not save only itself in that war...it saved the world.

I know qwert. The Russians won World War II. I always say that to everyone. Don't forget that Russia lost more people than all the other countries put together. 27 million Russians died in World War II.

However at the start it was Great Britain alone against the Germans. The Russians had a non aggression pact with Germany and France had already fallen. If it wasn't for them Hitler would have conquered all of Europe and it would have been a different story...

The Russian's produce alot of men but WHERE they soldiers or mere boys and girls!!!!

Did Germany lose the war with Russia because of the Russain bad weather in the Winter. More German Soldiers died of Starvation (cut off supplies due to weather conditions) and weather conditions than where killed by the Russian Red Army!!!!!

No Hulmey. The Russian soldiers were as tough as nails. Probably the toughest of all World War II. Unfortunately they were poorly armed and trained. It wasn't only the cold weather my friend. As I said in other threads...no one can beat the Russian bear.

i agree, if we had lost the battle of britain america wouldnt have declaired war and germany would have sent a full force into russia

Britain was unprepared at the start of the war and sometimes I think that if it was connected to mainland Europe it would probably have fallen under Nazi hands.

yeah at last something we all agree on and not only that it is a very interesting subject. The real winners of the war were Russia and USA who both became superpowers at the end of the war. The rest of us are screwed compared to where we were.

Hitler loved the English. Ethnically speaking the Angles and the Saxons originated from Germany. The English are Aryan. Hitler would have liked to forge an alliance with Britain as they were both Aryan nations (the superior race according to him). Then they could dominate the world. That's why he let them go at Dunkirk. He was still hoping he could forge this alliance. But the British did not accept of course and fought on. Note that even in prison camps the Germans respected the English much more than the Slavs or other ethnic groups which they considered inferior.
