I am wondering exactly what is meant by "scanning for multiple accounts" to prevent cheating. I am in a situation where I soon may be sharing a computer with other people. If one of them creates an account, will we be banned on account of multiple accounts logging in from the same IP address?

Yes. Your accounts will be deleted and your IP-address banned forever. And one of the multi hunters may come to your home and destroy your computer.

actually, what you do is PM lackattack, let him know whats happening, and you should be fine

Might I strongly recommend NOT joining games as opponents, unless you know all the players involved. Sooner or later someone will accuse the two of you of being in cahoots and when they see the same IP you will have a very hard time clearing your name.
