I did think they should have made more about how far it is from Winterfell, you could have got the impression that Catelyn rode down there in on afternoon, had a cup of tea and turned around. We should have more sense of the length and difficulty of the journey, and the peoples along the way. But I guess that'll become obvious later in the saga.
Does anyone know how many episodes there are?
10.

Hopefully the series will abe able to keep faithful to the story, while also not rushing through it. The council scene wavered close to being too fast paced. Hopefully for the next season there'll be 12 or even 14 episodes.

That was the weakest part of another excellent episode for me. I didn't completely follow all of the new characters being introduced, but it made up for it by the end. The guy playing Littlefinger was great.

Yeah the amount of new character being introduced is probably a little bit intimidating for someone who hasn't read the book. In time the plot should sort out the important ones to follow for people.

Also, I found this:

http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~madsb/home/read/asoiaf/maps/

I printed them all out and taped them together to make one big coherent map (be sure to leave the lands north of the wall as a small image to line it up better). It's now on the wall of my living room, so I can consult it during the show. It could be useful to those of you who haven't read the books.

Can someone try to explain what's up with the lands beyond the Summer Sea without throwing down any major spoilers? Minor spoilers aren't a big deal. It doesn't seem to connect in any way to the other big map and it doesn't look like that's where the Dothraki (sp?) are from.

I bought the first book of Martin's series about a month before the show started, but my sister (who has apparently read the entire series of books so far) made the argument that I should watch the show ignorant of anything, to keep the suspense up (and so we could compare the story telling method with one another) and then read the book between seasons.

I couldn't resist on having a map, though.

As best I can, I haven't read Storm of Swords. It's hard cause George Martin hasn't released a map of the Essos continent (the one that isn't Westeros). Best I can tell that map is south of the Dothraki sea. One of the Islands is Valyria is the old Kingdom of Valyria which is where the Targarians came from.

Here's an unofficial someone pieced together that might help:

This thread has fallen by the wayside a bit, but goddamn that was a good episode. I only saw episode 5 last night.

Hopefully other fans are here.

Yeah I still watch it. Happened to be home on Sunday night so I watched it live.

Eyrie doesn't seem to be on the map I found online anywhere, but they show it during the opening credits. Can anyone explain that?

The Erie is the main keep of the Vale of Arryn. Basically it is what Winterfell is of the North & Starks for The North East and Arryn's. You can see it on this map just a little north of where it says "The Bloody Keep". I don't know why it wasn't listed on any of your maps, by all means it should have been.

As a fan of the books, I've been tremendously enjoying the show, small quibbles aside (like how Gregor Clegane's nickname isn't "The Mountain" but "The Mountain That Rides", which always struck me as a much more evocative and frankly terrifying nickname).

I'm still watching, and I think that for the most part each episode has been better than the last. The most recent was definitely one of the most exciting. I'm glad they didn't pull any punches with portaying Lysa Arryn as a crazy bitch who still breast feeds her 5 year old weirdo child. The Eddard, Kingslayer sword fight was a nice touch to. I really like the scene they added with Robert and Cercei talking candidly together.

Duh the Mountain that Rides is one of the most badass nicknames Evah!!!!

If you haven't yet, you should read the books.

And if you like these types of gritty fantasy books, you should also consider reading Joe Abercrombie and Glenn Cook.

Thanks for the advice. I get no time whatsoever to read, but If they are on audiobook, Ill make them my next read(listen).

The Game of Thrones books should have an audio version (they are best sellers). I'm not sure about Abercrombie. Cook is the predecessor to Martin, writing in the 1980s I think, so he likely has no audio book versions.

just watched the first 8 episodes sunday into sunday night...glad I gave it another shot...definitely well done.

I will point out however, that the plot is basically just what might have happened in the time before the lord of the rings era, with zombies....

men fight men, evil comes...men band together to fight evil...

other than that fact ringing over and over in my mind as I watch, it was fun

It may seem that way, but as the story goes along it becomes, IMHO, far richer, in terms of characterization, than LOTR. Tolkein, for all his world-building gifts, was absolute rubbish at creating characters that were much more than one note. But Martin paints in various shades of gray, and the fellow who might seem an arch-bastard now becomes sympathetic and even heroic later on, and vice-versa. And he throws in enough fantastic plot twists to really keep you guessing as to how it's all going to play out.

I would disagree heartily, for similar reasons to Incandenza. While I have not read the books, it is quite clear from the show that the rapidly shifting alliances between people are the primary causal agent of violence, rather than the impending threat of zombie annihilation. At least, thus far, again, didn't read the books. But at least, there is terrifically little "banding together" to fight the evil, which it seems is present in about everybody.

Also, a lot of the show seems dedicated to just how shitty it was living during the middle ages, even for those lucky enough to be born into the aristocracy, and especially for the vast chunk of humanity.

Anybody else find the Dothraki a bit ethnocentric "savages?"

Well, I havent read the books....Im only guessing as to what comes next....and at this point, its impossible not to see a lord of the rings similarity... IE, men fight men, will need to band together to fight evil creatures...

I'm moving on to the third book right now. I'll tell you at this point there is no sign of men banding together what so ever, and fighting evil creatures is the smallest of subplots. If there's any 1 theme through out these books so far its men fucking over other men (not in a gay way (except for Renly))
