Risk at home?

One of the most wonderful things about CC (at least from my point of view) is that it has taught me so many new ways to play Risk, ways that I honestly hadn't even conceived of before I found this site.

In my university days my friends and I would play classic, standard, flat Risk..with a single troop on each territory to begin. At the time I didn't see the point of escalating (still don't to be honest), I felt no cards was a bit dull (not anymore!) and I had never even considered playing the game in teams.

These days, I like to play trips at home, but currently with a single troop on each territory rather than the CC 3. I usually play with spoongod over a few drinks and a smoke and it is always a great couple of hours. Without CC, I would never (in a million years) have thought of playing Risk in such a great way. It is perfect two player game.

A few times a year my various real-life buddies manwiththeplan, Agent 86, Spazzattack, Teutoburg and spoongod settle in for a serious no cards standard marathon..either on the classic board or the absolutely enormous 2.1 board spoon made about a year ago. The game naturally never finishes, or even gets close (maybe a couple get killed off), but we all get absolutely sozzled, shout abusive shit at each other and in general bond over the mad dice and drawing tenuous historical parallels.

Is there anything more fun than a Brit, an Aussie, a German, a Canadian and two Americans sitting down to shoot the shit over a long game of Risk?

Beyond the obvious (woof!), I can't think of a lot.

So, I have two questions:

1. Do you play Risk at home?

And...

2. What style of the game do you play?

1. not often enough, maybe once a year we manage to get a group together...

2. original rules, by the book, escalating baby, all the way, oh yeah...
... although sometimes we play RISK 2210, and that's.. well... a different animal all together...

1. Only about twice a year
2. Flat rate, start with a few more neutral territories. Makes for more fun loudly complaining about how many troops have lost, going through a bloody neutral just to try and kill you. etc

The board game, must be played with a bit of something different running through the blood stream. Wacky backy, and grog work great. Might want to stay clear of mushrooms and risk. Can get real scary

Risk at home is never as simple as it should be for me. The last time I tried, many moons ago, I had 6 of my oldest buds get together for a classic escalating event. We always allow treaties, even secret ones. Anyways, one of my friends had a treaty with another. One was to go for Asia while the other was to go for Africa. Obviously, the guy going for Asia was eventually reduced to one territory, and the other guy had a stack right next to it, eyeing up his cards.

On his turn he announced he was going to assault middle east into india, to which the other said 'cmon Mike, we had an alliance man...'

Mike then said 'things change' and dramatically threw his dice down, conquering india and getting 4 cards.

Then, the other (Alex), flips the board, which was the real final blow of the game.

yep. when i first got risk me and my friends used to play at least 3 times a week sometimes even until the crack of dawn despite the fact that i had to go to work at 9 am
as years went by i started playing rather rarely. jobs and kids got in the way of risk and now we play it maybe once a month. but it's still as fun as always.

2. What style of the game do you play?

obviously we started with classic map and classic rules but after a while we turned to nuclear risk, paranoia risk or even alien risk.
then i came here and made maps so i printed those and played them.
sometimes we even make our own rules on the spot.

I used to play all the time. We have played literally hundreds of games together, and the strategies required to live have changed dramatically over the years. The only problem is, we have played so much with basically the same people that it is starting to lose its fun. Things have gotten so petty amongst ourselves and we try to play nice as long as possible and not break people just so we won't be broken ourselves that its getting annoying. As soon as we start there is a constant barrage of swearing and all around abusive behavior toward each other that I'm not sure how much more we can play as a group.

Haven't played in years. One of the last times we played it was on our own map. We were given the idea by CC. Only one of the other guys still plays here.

Yes, it's so much fun when you're playing with the right people. We usually play FFA, flat rate, shotgun reinforcements. We do exponential when playing with 5-6 players. When with a smaller group, we sometimes play versions that we made up, like Domination, KOTH, Capital, etc. I love using diplomacy and persuasion to get people to do my bidding

I have never played Risk at home. Except for a game at a New Year's Eve party over 2 years ago, which led me to joining CC, and a handful of games at the Risk Classic last year (http://www.annualriskclassic.com) all my games have been online with you folks. My brothers played the board game growing up, but I don't recall ever joining in. Not enough ponies and sparkles, I guess.

Back when a few of my friends were all around in the same area, we would play occasionally (and of course I did so in my youth). We never played Teams, though I do believe we ended up making alliances and truces.

I think we mostly played Escalating, Adjacent. And for territory selection we would draw 'x' number of spoil cards and those would be our starting regions, but then we would take turns manually building up those regions usually.

But after a while, we switched from RISK to Axis and Allies since it provided for more intense games.

I'm not a huge fan of A&A mostly because there is one guy who has played it a bunch and the rest of us don't own it, so it's not a level playing field and whichever side he's on wins. Also, it is much more of a linear game imo.

It can be more linear, and there is certainly a learning curve, but we wanted something with more to it than playing on the Classic Board. (If Conquer Club would have been around, we probably would've played the maps here instead of periodic Classic and A&A).
