Dude how can you talk about politics and government telling people to leave when a large storm is going to hit the East Coast and some people can lose their live. Specially if they don't heed concerns of public officials to leave. It not just about you and your property its about you life. There are police and firemen who have to stay behind to watch and if they have to rescue you because you decided to stay behind then shame on you, but what would you know about hurricanes. It's seems the government and the media are making Hurricane Irene their poster child for the forcing of people out of their homes. So far it's mostly been ridicule, but as of right now I have heard the media as well as the president calling people who don't evacuate cowboys, dummies, idiots, etc.

For people who want to stay behind, it's called protecting your property. It's also called Freedom.

people who wish to stay in hurricane Irene are free to stay. I am not affected by the storm, but thanks for conceding the point and your concerns for my safety.

As far as I've read, mandatory evacuations are not for individual citizen safety but to prevent lawlessness and looting. In NYC all the areas of mandatory evacuation have their evacuation orders coinciding closely with the hour at which police will either be withdrawn or barracked.

• I don't have a problem with the current state of mandatory evacuations for this reason. I would share Scott's problem (but don't since this isn't the case), however, if they were ordered for general public health/goodwill. People have the right to read a John Grisham novel in a lawn chair in the middle of a flood as much as they have the right to refuse to take a lifesaving medication.

As OvO said stop trolling. I never said talked about liberty or security. Its about safety. You sacrifice your liberty every time you get searched at the airport for security reasons. You are asked/forced to leave your home during an evacuation for safety reasons. Learn the differences.

Regardless, as ol' Saxi said twice, neither of these scenarios is what's actually occurring. No mandatory evacuations have been ordered to protect individual safety. They're taking place to preserve public order, and there is a big difference between those two things (the former is the state protecting individuals from themselves, the latter is the state protecting individuals from other individuals).

There have been a great many official mandatory evacuations ordered.

None for reasons of health and safety, however, which is what this argument appears to be about. When I'm back in the BTR I shall endeavor to look up the text of the specific orders which I'm sure will affirm this.

Well boys and girls. Its hitting us as I speak but from what I see and what the news sees are 2 diff things. yes its blowing its ass off and raining but power being out hasnt been that bad and not alot of flooding here. i think the up state people will get a good rain storm nothing more. but i cant say for sure. It was built up so much in the media as, oh shit you better run and hide, when all you had to do is sit in ur easy chair and watch the news with a cold beer..lol. It is better to be safe then sorry, but i will say i have been through way worse hurricanes then this one. This is like a little kitten compared to others. Come on now I still have internet for cring out loud.lol.

In fairness to the media, I believe a lot of the warnings were directed at NJ and New York city, folks that are not quite as self-reliant as most people in other areas. Also, a lot of what I heard was "you need to get out becase IF something does happen, bridges and subways won't be operating".
