the pleasantries are for playing games as *befits* your rank - i.e. in an sporting, competent manner. the rank itself is non-negotiable.

as far as the pw goes, it's a lot easier if you use the standard one, and you'll find people will join your posted games more readily. i don't see why you wouldn't want to, but it's not a requirement, as such.
