My father once owned a cat who loved to suck our earlobes for whatever reason. One of my greatest pleasures in life is riding my bike in the wee hours of the morning, when the streets are but shadows and the city is of the dead. It's hard to explain... I feel so right, so complete, I guess. Like this is what I was meant to do. Just me and my machine, and the paths I can take are innumerable. I would liken it to those reflective periods when people are staring at the sunset or out to sea or something.

I would say it possibly stems from my father's stories he told me. When he was a couple of years younger than I am now, he rode his motorcycle across half the U.S. He went for a year or so, just him and what he could carry. I've always wanted to do that, but he is from a different era. When you could work a job for a day or two and get paid under the table, and you didn't have to fill out forms for proof of citizenship and w-4s and all that crap.

But for those minutes or hours after I get off work, I drive through town and the cold air freezes my face and creeps up my sleeves and I feel life, and I think that maybe I could do it, maybe I should. It makes me feel almost a stranger in my own town, but not in a bad way. Once, after an all night party, I set off just before sunrise, and rode home at the breaking of dawn. I still remember that ride and that sunrise vividly; the splash of violent reddish-orange light, the promise of a new day; the cold, fresh air the sears your lungs like white-hot fire.

And sometimes on these constitutionals I think that today is the day, this is the time that I sate that thirst, that I run of half-cocked and leave everyone and everything behind.

Huh, funny you say that cause for the past couple of weeks I've been going to bed at like 3-6 AM and I have to cycle to get home.
I find I work better at night, less distractions, but the ride home is definitely a perk as well. I usually go like a bat out of hell, empty streets + cool air + exertion = pretty damn nice

Btw, read a guy's travel blog once. Basically he got sick of his shitty job and decided he was going to quit and find something better, but before that he decided to take a chunk of the money he had saved and go on a backpacking trip through South America, basically going till he runs out of money.

It wasn't a lot of money, so he was expecting it to last a couple weeks at most, but it turns out that if you camp out most nights and buy cheap ass local food living isn't that expensive. I think he ended up staying for about 6 months and travelled a good chunk of the continent by foot and bus. It was a pretty damn awesome story and I've wanted to do something like that since but fucking life keeps getting in the way ...

Meh, 4:30 AM now, gonna call it a night.
