The birth of America was the end of slavery.
Some racists are far too obsessed with race to ever see any of the facts clearly.
Didn't Europe make slavery illegal far before America did? It's not really a
good thing that "America was the end of slavery" simply because America was the
last civilized nation to actually stop using it.
Some parts of Europe, sure. Also, those parts of Europe that made slavery illegal did not do it in their first year or tenth year of existence. For some countries you seem to be holding on a pedestal, it took thousands of years for them to end slavery (wtg!). It only took my country 2 generations.
All of this is actually (though not surprisingly) completely irrelevant to the point.
Phatscotty wrote:Not bad for the early 1800's.
Actually, it IS very bad, given the state of slavery in the rest of the civilized world at the time.
Phatscotty wrote:It's not like there was twitter or automobiles to help people organize against slavery during a time when states were considered to be their own countries for a while.
True...all of those countries used their consciences instead, whereas America was just worried about profits.
Phatscotty wrote:Quite impressive actually.
Yes, though not for America.
Phatscotty wrote:America's founding laid the path for "all men are created equal". Issues don't just solve themselves. It took an American born generation who were taught American principles of freedom. Of course you need to learn about American principles before you can practice those principles, which is something you guys seem to always forget.
"You guys"? Where the hell do you think I live? The fact of the matter is that, as far as slavery goes, America is a black mark in history, NOT a group to be held up as a shining example.
