I disagree with you 100%. Here's my rationale...there is not a SIGNIFICANT difference between President Obama and any of the Republican candidates other than Ron Paul. Yes, there are differences, but they are not apparently many. Therefore, "ushering in whomever the opposition wants" really isn't a major disaster, because that's close to what you'd be getting anyway. Meanwhile, if a significant enough group votes for Ron Paul (even without his getting the nomination), voting for him will absolutely NOT "be contrary to achieving any goals he presents" because the parties in power (Repugnicans and Democraps alike) would get their wakeup call that the American people ARE serious about change in Washington and they're on notice. It would absolutely not be a wasted vote, and it absolutely would not be a vote in favor of anything other than Ron Paul himself.
...I prefer a man who will burn the flag and then wrap himself in the Constitution to a man who will burn the Constitution and then wrap himself in the flag.
