WWII: Operation Overlord [working title]

Post by Nesoi »

The retaking of Europe.

There are plenty of maps centred on World War Two; but I think I have a unique angle.

Operation Overlord

There exists already a D-Day map. However, this is obviously focused very much on the beach invasions rather than the bigger picture that I would like to portray - from D-Day to the taking of Paris.

Gameplay elements I want to include:
  • One-way attack routes from England (and Atlantic) over to the D-Day landings.
    • Ship routes
    • Air routes - paratroopers
  • AA-guns
  • Artillery/machine gun defense
  • Large French towns as bonuses
  • French resistance dotted around
  • A general attack path from England to Paris
Seeing as the gameplay is intended to all travel in the same direction - from England to Paris, through the D-Day landings - it might be an idea to create several different starting locations for each player? I.e. perhaps some smaller towns which either have a large auto-deploy, or are isolated regions (only attack out), located in France, and some ships/bombers/etc. on the Allied side?

This is sort of the area of reference I'm looking at, as well as the angle and perspective:

Graphic style? Does anyone know of a website where I can upload large files with no ugly compression? I've tried 4 sites; all make my image blurry.

I say run with the idea. Personally I use imageshack to upload my map images.

Imageshack works fine. They have a size limit for free accounts but you're unlikely to reach it with CC maps - it's something like 10MB per image IIRC. As far as I know Imageshack doesn't compress your images without asking. And there's no limit on bandwidth or amount of images you can upload.

Also, if you upload as png:s, no one can compress your images, seeing as png is a lossless format.

Thanks guys. I'm going to start getting some gameplay in then hopefully move it over to the drafting room.

Since the gameplay is quite directional - aka, from England, over to ships+beaches/planes+paratroopers, then through France and into Paris, I think that starting locations may be a good option. Multiple starting points for each player including a small French town, a few select regions in England close to ports/runways, and perhaps a few more places - each location could be surrounded by neutrals, or they could be regions which only attack out to counter the dice-luck element.

Look forward to seeing a draft map with regions and bonuses on it. Then we can get a better sense of it all.

Good luck!
