Under-rated movies

Post by nietzsche »

I believe this will be more subjective that the Over-rated movies thread, so let's have fun.

I personally like watching Match Point over and over. Other movies I enjoy watching many times are Great Expectations (Cuaron's version) and Closer.

I find that Woody Allen lacks acceptance nowadays? Like people frowns upon his personal life and somehow decide they don't like his movies.

Mega shark vs giant octopus.
Snakes on a Plane.

But, seriously

On Her Majesty's Secret Service. It is usually one of the lowest rated Bond movies, and Lazenby is the least popular Bond, even though this movie managed to perfectly mesh a world-anhilating plan with plausibility and also mesh a playboy lifestyle of Bond with a true and deep romance. It's a bit slow by today's standards, but if you generally like older movies, you might want to check it out.

Unbreakable

I met Night at a screening and we had a v. cool convo about that flick. I love how every shot looks like a page from a comic. He loved that movie and was bummed more people didn't get into it.

John Carter.
I was eager to see it from the moment I heard they were making it, and I thought it was a great movie.
But if I hadn't taken my son with me to see it, I would have been in the cinema on my own.
The worst thing about it bombing so badly is that there's unlikely to be any more movies set in this world.

I would say Born on the 4th of July is a really under-rated film. It follows the true story of Ron Kovic a Vietnam veteran who comes back from war having to deal with both the emotional torment of accidently killing a fellow soldier and also the physical torment of wheelchair bound after being paralysed from the chest down after being shot. The film portrays the tale of Ron Kovic having to deal with the rapidly evolving and changing American society and the scorn that the veterans had to deal with upon return from combat. Tom Cruise does a great job as well of playing the anguished veteran. Definitely worth a watch.

Your point? It is hardly ever mentioned or discussed these days compared to other Vietnam epics like The Deerhunter, Apoc Now, Platoon and FMJ (all great films). To play that game, Thin Red Line was nominated for 7. Others mentioned here were also widely acclaimed like Invictus and Watchmen.

Really? I don't remember much talk about Invictus, but Watchmen I know was huge.

There is no shortage of great "foreign" films that don't get a much media attention in the US or spend bucket loads of cash on promotions.

Yes! totally loved that movie. Very sad and depressing, but very real and in depth, you really get a look at what people live with and through when injured in war. The scenes at the hospital, the impact on the family, the sacrifice and regret of his love life, his hippy buddies who did not go to war became wealthy business owners and having to see up close what he could have been, the treatment of our vets when they returned home. I really liked it it all came full circle and even though he spent much of his life ignoring and regretting, he never gave up and found purpose and made a difference.

You guys both have points. While it got some credit, I think Watchmen was underrated because it didn't get the credit many thought it deserved, and also the disappointing box office draw. 4th of July I would say is more overlooked than under-rated, but it still was a movie of greatness on all levels.

Ever seen The Red Violin? The one I saw was in French...but it may be in English, too.
