Twilight Falls on Day 2: The Slow Painful Death of Betiko
MOD NOTE: The following is a TWILIGHT SCENE; a scene between now and the official posting of the elements death scene, around 10 PM later tonight. It gives players a chance to discuss last minute topics as you move into night if you so choose. No votes will count or be tallied from here on out till the next day scene is posted. Night actions should NOT be submitted now. I will make it clear to you when night actions must be sent to me. The lynched player may not post. He is dead.
Twilight, Day 2.
This day started by the group of remaining elements having to call I.U.P.A.C., the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemists, to notify the organization that there was a vacancy in the Periodic Table where silicon once resided. Visibly shaken and confused, the call was made and the day continued.
As the discussion heated up, tempers neared boiling, but everyone remained solid in their resolutions to find an element that was guilty. At the beginning of the day, most of the arguments were centered around only one of the remaining elements. His reactions, or lack thereof, during to first day were just not sitting well many of the other elements. There would be no awkward joking about the metals today.
The middle of the day saw a lot of conversation about the elements themselves. There was a whole lot of discussion and not a lot of accusing.
“Where are the halogens?”
“Everyone can’t be a nonmetal.”
“What’s so noble about a noble gas?”
But near the end of the day, the elements shifted their vitriol. The element that contributed the most to the dialogue was now feeling the heat. Several elements were accusing him of being a metalloid. But not until a majority of the present elements was reached could they really determine what element he really was. And by then, it will be too late to save him if he is a nonmetal. But if he’s a metalloid, everything is all good.
Finally, in the end, the decision to destroy the element named betiko was made. The other elements decided this, much to the chagrin of the target. But now, they begin the more morbidly interesting discussion. How should the elements do this task? There is always the mass spec. which proved its destructive power last night. Then, there is the radiation box. And don’t forget about the basement. There is always the particle accelerator in the basement.
The elements discuss this for only a short time. They determine that since the mass spec has already been shown worthy, the unfortunate element should be destroyed in the same manner. “It determined that the first element destroyed was a metalloid, so maybe it will be good luck,” an element says, with a dark humor that was not appreciated. The radiation box seems not very effective against the metalloids, and the particle accelerator is all the way in the basement. The only problem is that the process takes a few hours. The death will be slow and the analysis will be slower.
Betiko is pushed into the mass spec by the other elements. As the atom falls, his electron cloud parts for a moment, revealing his protons, but too late for anyone to count. Maybe there were 34 protons, maybe 36, maybe 38. The wave functions were just too hard to read in the split second they were visible. Damn Schrodinger. They just weren’t sure. There were two things they were sure of, though. The first was that there plenty of protons. The second is that the blood curdling scream that betiko let loose as he entered through the injection port was spine chilling.
Anxious and nervous, the gathered elements had to wait for the identity to be revealed after the instrument runs its course and the computer spit out the analysis of the element. It’s scary to think that betiko will suffer a long and painful death by mass spectrometer. At least that’s what the nonmetals are thinking. The remaining metalloid mafia, without visibly reacting to what has just happened, can’t wait until night falls to exact revenge on the death of the most important of their element-kind, silicon.
“Let’s hurry up and wait,” an element says.

The mass spec’s auto-power-off feature is obvious to the elements as the noise in the lab starts to die down. The idle chatter during this time is filling space only because every element was nervous about the outcome of the analysis the computer is going to give in under a minute. The element has finally hit the instrument’s detector, and the fourier transform processing is at an end. Every element can almost hear the sound of betiko’s subatomic particles smashing into the detector. Hell, they can just about hear his quarks.
As the printer finishes its job, here it is what each element sees:
Analysis:
4 isotopes
Mass of 32 – 94.93% abundant
Mass of 33 – 0.76% abundant
Mass of 34 – 4.29% abundant
Mass of 36 – 0.02% abundant
The elements now see the error of their ways. Betiko, Sulfur, Vanilla Townie was the element that they wiped off the table, the periodic table. They gasp, thinking how badly they estimated the number of protons. Ugh. You can never be too sure when wave functions are being calculated. As night starts to begin in the lab, each element settles into an uncomfortable sleep. They decide to call the I.U.P.A.C. in the morning to have them remove this element officially from the periodic table. Mistakes happen in a lab. Some mistakes produce penicillin others wipe nonmetals right off the periodic table.
Night falls now. Please, no talking in the thread until day breaks. PM me any night actions you may have. Due to a prior engagement, please note that Day 3 will begin in on October 28, at 10 PM EST. That’s 3 days from now, and one day longer than it normally would be.

MOD NOTE: I live in the path of Hurricane Sandy. While I am not in fear of anything personally, my power may go off and I may not be able to post or keep up. I am almost 100% sure I will be able to post the Day 3 Scene tonight between 9 PM and 10 PM EST, and I encourage players to keep playing as normal. Day 3: The Nonmetals Get Nervous
Day 3: The Nonmetals Get Nervous
The elements rouse from their uneasy sleep. The tiny lab they occupy is filled with tension. They need to call I.U.P.A.C. this morning to notify them of the vacancy where sulfur once resided. The nonmetals still feel pain of the incorrect destruction of one of their own.
“Poor Betiko,” someone says.
“Yeah, poor Betiko, but even poorer for this dude” another says, sheet of paper in his hand.
All the elements stop in their tracks. Uncertainty reigns for some time. They just could figure out where their momentum was taking them in this very small space that they knew very well. They all just want to know what’s going on. It turns out that an unfortunate element, at some point in the night, was put into the mass spectrometer, rendering it destroyed. They knew from the previous day that the injection process is excruciating. Wouldn’t they have heard the scream? They weren’t that tired. How the heck did this happen?
They finally collect themselves, looking at the sheet of paper being held up. This is what they see:
Analysis:

Now they get it. Sempaispellcheck, Carbon, Town Cop, has been destroyed.
They decide they better get this day underway and try to save what’s left of the nonmetals. But wait. They all look around. Another element is missing.
Where is the other element? Looking around the lab, they finally see it. Their other missing element friend reacting in the corner of the radiation shielded fume hood. It’s too late for the elements to rescue the element stuck there. The element has completely lost its identity, as it has been bombarded with radiation from a gamma source. They are seeing the last vestiges of it electron cloud getting ripped away and its nucleus getting torn apart by the powerful radiation. Everyone thinks the same thing, “What a horrible way to die.”
They see the glow in the hood and a quick thinking element grabs a spectroscope to see exactly which element was victimized. He sees the line spectrum below through the single slit in the end of the instrument:
And at that moment another element, taking role, determined that it was Jonty125 that was missing. The remaining elements now know that Jonty125, Nitrogen, Vanilla Townie has been annihilated, and gruesomely at that.
They collect themselves for some time. The nonmetals lost two of their own last night. Combined with yesterday’s loss, it looks like there are three blank spots on the table for the elements to call into I.U.P.A.C. With each nonmetal destruction, this means more space for the metalloids to spread into the nonmetals territory. With every passing day, the metalloids are closer to achieving their goal.
This begins Day 3. The deadline for Day 3 is 10 PM, November 8. That’s 10 days from now.
