Hello everyone, and welcome to the 106th edition of the Dispatch. I apologize for the delay, but all of the teams have been working hard to bring you some great info, and this one is jam packed. We're also excited to mention the new Scoreboard, Saxibot, and all of the new updates provided by BigWham the man! Enjoy.

My name is Seamus76 and I'll be your host for this fine installment of the Dispatch. It's an honor to host 106 for the great Dukasaur, who deserves a rest, albeit a quick one. As the Foundry Executive, and a map maker I promise not to talk too much about the Foundry, the maps, how great the maps being developed are, and how you should all take a moment to stop by and comment on some new maps in development. But anyway, here's what we have to offer:

The first regular section is Mess Hall and Interrogation Room, which includes an in depth interrogation of the great Kabanellas, as well as Round 3 of iAmCaffeine's Dispatch Trivia.

The Platoon Report covers all aspects of the Clan scene, and this issue includes a full Conquer Cup 4 update, a quick look at the scoreboards in Clan League 5, and now back on a monthly basis Clan Shakers and Movers. Are you one?

War Games includes another interview with Tournament Winner I_AM_BOGEY, as well as Tournament Tips and TPA Wrap, which always provides helpful info.

Cartographic Surveillance brings back the ever popular Hidden Symbols, exposing secrets behind some of your favorite maps. We also detail out all maps currently being developed, and Kootz1973 highlights MrBenns new Small World map.

Finally, our Next Mission Brief includes such things as the closing credits and information on how to subscribe.

Seamus76 - Foundry Executive & Issue 106 Guest Host

And finally some Late-breaking News and Announcements:

Newbie Help

Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information, Mafia and You, and Rules and Terms of Mafia.
Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you.

What is "Mafia"?
Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town.

Mafia News
Old school mafia veteran Minister Masket and has planned another mafia game. The poll resulted in a Valkyria Chronicles theme being chosen. Look for it in the future!

Mafia Callouts
Calling all players interested! Some mafia games need some filling:

Sign-ups:
No games are in sign ups currently, but some will open up soon!

Seeking Replacements:
Consult the Replacement Thread to see what games are in need of reserves/replacements.

Now get out there and investigate Mafia for yourself: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=213

Advanced Roles and Strategy by safariguy5
A discussion on when to vote fellow scum members is put forwards.

When to Bus

What is It?
Bussing (or throwing under the bus) in this instance refers to a mafia player voting for another mafia player of the same faction. This may be prearranged or occur as the flow of a particular game day demands.

Example
Alice votes for Bob. Both are in the same mafia group. Alice is therefore bussing Bob.

How to Use this Strategy
Bussing is generally used as a risk/reward strategy to deflect suspicion. In general, not bussing unless absolutely necessary is the right play. The later on in the game and the closer to LYLO, the more viable the bussing option becomes. It's also important to consider who the guiltiest looking players are. Bussing tends to be most useful when a very town looking mafia member votes for a suspicious looking mafia member. Finally, it's important to realize the possible meta implications and how likely the other remaining players are to accept the bus. Sometimes a defense of a fellow mafia player is less risky than bussing them.

Interrogation of Kabanellas
Q. I'm (IcePack) really excited about your new map coming, have you heard any news regarding the XML updates required to make your map work?

Which one of them? :)
Actually, both the 5 Towers and the Age of Buccaneers need some XML updated, though the last one would need a more radical update. Regarding the 5 Towers, which I think would be a more feasible one, I'm waiting for a solution.

Q. Do you have any other ideas or plans for new maps that can work within the current XML structure?

At this point I just want to conclude those that are on the Foundry. I will need to change the Age of Buccaneers map for that, so we can consider that it will work within the current XML structure.

Q. Have you had any formal training/taken classes for graphics?

Well, probably just a perception of design & style related to the fact of being an architect. As for the software, I had to learn it for my self.

Q. Will you ever let the Clandemonium map to be updated with new clan names?

I will never oppose it :)

Q. Which long gone map maker do you miss?

I'd like to see more things from Qwert and natty dread

Q. Are their any players you really hate? A yes or no diplomatic answer will be accepted.

Really not :) I tend not to overrate stupidity on this site

Q. Your recent maps have gone all papery in look, any reason for this?

Not really, probably just a context thing.
Considering the last two (currently on the Foundry): for the Age of Buccaneers It seemed the right thing to do, being a Caribbean-buccaneering style map. As for the 5 Towers I wanted to expand King's Court 2 style of graphics and game-play.

But coming to think of it, there's probably a natural affinity for that kind of look. I did use it several times (Age of Dawn, Napoleonic Europe, KC2)

Q. Why is it you are the best team mate that I (Mageplunka69) ever played with and not in a sexual way?

Natural nonsexual chemistry :)

Q. Why do you like the smell of napalm in the morning mate?

Only the smell of Napalm in Coppola's Apocalypse Now

Q. Where does your name come from?

It's just a variation of my own family name.

Q. How about a new XL version of Clandemonium that could include loads of the current clans?

Not keen about wasting hours in a Clandemonium revamp/upgrade

Q. Did you mean to go with 'a snake ball' or 'kale n salab', and the letters got all jumbled up, when you registered for CC? If the same happened to me (hopalong), what do you think I was actually trying to type when I registered?

got'a'long....

Q. Is it true that FOED has orgies? How come I have never been invited?

You need to be a veteran FOED member and you need to be able to drink one bottle of Whiskey in less that 20 minutes while smoking cuban cigars. You also need to have a FOED tatoo located in some erogenous zone of your choice.
Having read Churchill's biography (or from any other prestigious drinker) might help too.

Q. Which of your maps do you hate losing on the most?

ALL!!!!!!!!

Q. What do you think of CC having 225+ maps? Is there no bottom in sight?

I'd say that there are probably too many maps.

Q. Do you think that we should periodically go through and remove older maps and/or revamp the ones that aren't up to par anymore?

Most def!

Q. Is the rumor true that you are making a map for Vegas that awards no points because whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas?

Not that I know of... while sober at least. :) But that's a freaking good idea!!

Q. Do you find it a challenge to always create with only one hand? What is the most exciting thing you do with your other hand while creating maps?

Holding a Scotch (I wouldn't call it exciting though)

Q. Ass or breast man?

Breast & Ass combined with a mild mixture of Ass & Breast

Q. What does the Fox say?

hugh?!!

Q. Is it true you are trying to make a map of a woman's body where the goal is to hold the g spot for 2 turns... The kicker is, you are going to move the g spot each turn....?

No XML for that (yet....)

Q. LSD or paint thinners?

Both, but we can't forget diluent either. All mixed preferably.

Q. When will be the right moment in Game 7413019 for you to make your big move? Rumour has it that that game actually started on cave walls before the last ice age ... which begs the question: evolution or evil lotion?

I'm preparing a backstage move, allright. :-$
it will happen on round 2000, and it will probably cause a temporary crash on CC

CC4 Update by IcePack
Spoiler
Spoiler
Round of 16
KORT vs TFFS: 44-17 KORT Wins!
KORT is the first clan to advance into the Round of 8 where they will face OSA to get into the quarter finals!
Final Result: KORT Advances
IcePack Predicted: KORT Advances

OSA vs OTP: 33-28 OSA Wins!
It's official! OSA has taken the match and will face KORT in the Round of 8! They'll need to be One Step Ahead in order to out maneuver the cows.
Final Result: OSA Advances
IcePack Predicted: OTP Advances

TSM vs MYTH: 38-21 TSM Wins!
TSM will advance here to face IA. TSM will face a difficult battle ahead, and will need to stop monkeying around now that they've secured the MYTH war.
Final Result: TSM Advances
IcePack Predicted: TSM Advances

IA vs MM: 31-21 IA Wins!
IA gives a strong showing against MM, and will move onto face TSM. I favor IA advancing in the Round of 8, although the monkies can always surprise!
Final Result: IA Advances
IcePack Predicted: IA Advances

TOFU vs DYN: 46-15 TOFU Wins!
TOFU has secured their victory and thus enter the Round of 8. TOFU will face either RA or ATL next round, which are locked in heated battle to get the chance to face TOFU. It looks like ATL has nearly secured the victory.
Final Result: TOFU Advances
IcePack Predicted: TOFU Advancing

RA vs ATL: 27-29 IcePack Predicts: ATL Advances
This has been a very exciting, very interesting war. Slightly controversial as well, with ATL leading by two. The exact number of penalties / forfeits that RA has been given in the match up. A late start gave way to early punishment to RA, who started off 1 behind before the match up began. A miscount on player games had janomike in too many games, and added another setback to RA's chances here, allowing ATL to remake a game. Look for a final probably of 31-30, or 32-29 in favor of ATL.

AFOS vs ACE: 13-35 IcePack Predicts: ACE Advances
It seems that the recent shake up's in both AFOS and ACE have gone in entirely different directions. AFOS had several players depart unexpectedly after their poor performance in the CC3 finals, and did not perform to expectations here. ACE is the brain child / merger of AOC and EMP players, who appear to be doing exactly what they set out to do. They are headed to the CC4 Round of 8, where they will face off vs LOW! That will definitely be a match up to watch.
Final Result: ACE Advances
IcePack Predicted: ACE Advancing

ID vs LOW: 21-40 LOW Wins!
Legends of War have overtaken the Imperial Dragoons! Both clans did very well in Round of 32, but LOW will have the opportunity to advance into the Round of 8 and play against ACE. LOW continues its hot streak, while ACE gets more and more experience under their belt together as a unified clan front. Who do you have advancing, ACE, or LOW? I'm going to predict ACE, but this will be one of the most exciting match ups of the Round of 8 imo.
Final Result: LOW Advances
IcePack Predicted: LOW Advancing
Spoiler
Round of 8 Look Ahead
KORT vs OSA: 2-2 IcePack Predicts: KORT Advances
A rematch of the CC3 Quarter Finals, which ended in KORT's favor 32-29. This should be interesting to see what lesson's OSA has learned in order to stay one step ahead in this rematch. In the end, KORT is the heavy favorite and I think will only increase their win margin from last time.

IA vs TSM: Not yet started. IcePack Predicts: IA Advances
This should be a good match up, IA last met up against TSM in a league match, which ended 7-5 in IA's favor back in 2012. Yet another match up in 2011 had IA beat out TSM, by 1. However, in their only full war match up in these two long standing CC clan's history, TSM out performed IA 22-18 way back in mid-2009. A lot has changed since then, but in the end I think IA will get their revenge and put this full war in the win column.

ACE vs LOW: Starts Nov 3rd! IcePack Predicts: ACE Advances
ACE is sure to be a top level clan once they land on the F400 scoreboard. However, LOW has definitely been raising some eyebrows, and their rankings have really showed that they are back in strength. LOW has won their last 4 match up's, and 7 of the last 10. This one could go either way and will be the most exciting to watch, and my feelings won't be hurt if my prediction is wrong here. Both are great clans.

TOFU vs ATL/RA: Not yet started. IcePack Predicts: TOFU Advances
TOFU continues to sit at the top of the rankings, with only KORT within reasonable reach. ATL is a strong new clan, while RA is showing its strength as a clan and highly undervalued. However, some errors definitely did not do RA any favors in their match up against ATL, and looks like ATL will advance to face TOFU. No matter who faces TOFU, I feel they will have a tough time advancing. ATL can definitely do some damage, but regardless I predict TOFU advancing, and will be surprised if there is an upset in this round.

Hello friends, and welcome to your favourite part of the Newsletter, "War Games", where you can find information about CC Tournaments, and other stuff in the Tournament scene!

In this Issue, we bring you another interview with Tournament Winner I_AM_BOGEY by mcshanester29, and DaveH delivers his usual helpful news in Tournament Tips and TPA Wrap. Unfortunately we don't have our usual Join This? Or Not! article this time as our writer is presently busy *shifty eyes*.

Nevertheless, we hope you enjoy the reading!

Meet the Tournament Winners: I_AM_BOGEY by mcshanester29
Spoiler
1.How did you come up with your username? Anything interesting you would like to tell us about yourself?

My user name is from my love of golf. I am just a bout a bogey golfer, was a double bogey golfer when I signed up though haha. Eventually I hope I need to change my name to I_AM_PAR
Image

2. What are your favorite kinds of tournaments to play in?

The ones I win!

3. What is your favorite map?

I like the classic map the best, always have, always will.

4. Do you remember your first tournament win? If so which one was it and were you surprised?

I do not remember the first one anymore. I used to play a lot of tourneys, now just mainly if someone asks me to be on their team.

5. What was the tournament that you won that you scared all pets and children in a mile radius cause you were so excited in winning :) ?

Probably the first time I won a tourney on Ams Race! map. I have always liked that map and it took me a minute to learn it. I played HighlanderAttack a series heads up of 30 games I think to learn the map and he was the best at it at the time and probably still is. I think I lost 3-27 or something,

6. Do you have regular team mates that plays with you in tournaments?

Several clan mates (go ID!) and a few friends outside of ID.

7. With an impressive 40 tournament wins are you content with that accomplishment?

I suppose so. Have not played regularly since I maxed out on the tourney trophies at 30. The last 10 just happened while playing some team tourneys for fun.

8. What do you like most about the tournament scene?

Competition for sure. Everyone plays hard no matter the rank.

9. What improvements would you like to see in the tournament scene?

More trophies!

10. Anything else you would like to add?

Conquer Club is awesome. =D> Great overall site and tourneys are a lot of fun!

Thanks for the interview!!! I hope your able to soon change your name to I_AM_BIRDIE ;)
Tournament Tips by DaveH
Spoiler
In this article I have an Excel macro or subroutine that will create the match-ups for any number of players in a round robin tournament.

The way of creating match-ups is quite simple; for instance if you have 6 players you can write down 1 to 6 in a circular fashion to give your three round 1 matches:
1 plays 6
2 plays 5
3 plays 4
Now you can leave 1 where it is and "rotate" the others in an anti-clockwise direction for subsequent rounds:
1 plays 5
6 plays 4
2 plays 3 then:

1 plays 4
5 plays 3
6 plays 2 then:

1 plays 3
4 plays 2
5 plays 6 and finally:

1 plays 2
3 plays 6
4 plays 5

So, for coding we need to input the number of players, first defining the name of the subroutine

Code: Select all

Sub RoundRobin()
PlayerNo = InputBox(Prompt:="Enter the number of players", _
Title:="Enter the number of players", Default:=32)
This sets the variable "PlayerNo" to the input value. Of course it may be an odd number, in which case we must add another player that will give a "bye" to each player throughout the tournament. The test for an even number is if the integer of half the number is equal to the integer of half of (the number plus one)

Code: Select all

If Int(PlayerNo / 2) <> Int((PlayerNo + 1) / 2) Then
    PlayerNo = PlayerNo + 1
End If
Now we put the set of numbers for the first round into the spreadsheet:

Code: Select all

For i = 1 To PlayerNo / 2
    Cells(3 + i, 2).Value = i
    Cells(3 + i, 3).Value = PlayerNo + 1 - i
Next i
The final part is to replicate the process of copying the previous set of numbers into the next set with all numbers "rotated" apart from 1.

Code: Select all

For i = 1 To PlayerNo - 2
        Cells(2, 3 + i * 3).Value = i + 1
    For j = 1 To PlayerNo / 2
        Select Case j
            Case 1
                Cells(4, 2 + i * 3).Value = 1
                Cells(4, 3 + i * 3).Value = Cells(5, 3 + (i - 1) * 3).Value
            Case 2
                Cells(5, 2 + i * 3).Value = Cells(4, 3 + (i - 1) * 3).Value
                Cells(5, 3 + i * 3).Value = Cells(6, 3 + (i - 1) * 3).Value
            Case PlayerNo / 2
                Cells(3 + PlayerNo / 2, 2 + i * 3).Value = Cells(2 + PlayerNo / 2, 2 + (i - 1) * 3).Value
                Cells(3 + PlayerNo / 2, 3 + i * 3).Value = Cells(3 + PlayerNo / 2, 2 + (i - 1) * 3).Value
            Case Else
                Cells(j + 3, 2 + i * 3).Value = Cells(j + 2, 2 + (i - 1) * 3).Value
                Cells(j + 3, 3 + i * 3).Value = Cells(j + 4, 3 + (i - 1) * 3).Value
        End Select
    Next j
Next i

End Sub

The full routine is as follows:

Code: Select all

Sub RoundRobin()
PlayerNo = InputBox(Prompt:="Enter the number of players", _
Title:="Enter the number of players", Default:=32)
If Int(PlayerNo / 2) <> Int((PlayerNo + 1) / 2) Then
    PlayerNo = PlayerNo + 1
End If

Cells(2, 3).Value = 1

For i = 1 To PlayerNo / 2
    Cells(3 + i, 2).Value = i
    Cells(3 + i, 3).Value = PlayerNo + 1 - i
Next i

        End Select
    Next j
Next i

End Sub
You can then match your player list - perhaps even automating it using lookups!

These "tips" started off as ones that I used to make it a bit easier in managing my own tournaments. Now, I am looking at other types of tournaments and scoring systems by all you innovative TO's out there. So, if you have a unique scoring system that you would like me to have a go at automating, please let me know and I'll be pleased to try and assist. Any queries on the above I'll be glad to respond to of course. Please note that I have just moved to Excel 2010, so there may be variations if you have other versions of Excel)

Also finished is Silly Knig-it's "Epsilon Ski Race" with bahrain winning ahead of Gamefreakguy and Tin Trumpet.

And another finisher is the Major that Swifte rescued; "Missionary's Clockwork Rumble"; with the quads of benga, silversun6, Robespierre__ and uckuki winning from Shoop76, seechster, swifte and spitemalice. I hope you have all enjoyed Hidden Symbols, and have continued to keep you eyes open as you play your favorite maps for anything out of the ordinary.

Dungeon of Draknor - Level 1
For this issue we'll bring back one of our favorite map makers, and hidden symbol experts, WidowMakers, and let you know a little something new about Dungeon of Draknor - Level 1. I'm sure you have all played this map, and some of you might have played it a few hundred, or a thousand times but have you noticed the four dead bodies in the Gauntlet Room? Probably not, check them out.
Image
Even if you have noticed them, did you know they actually have a meaning? According the the great WidowMakers they represent the four players in the original 1985 Atari Gauntlet video game. Bet you didn't know that.

Tribal War - Florida
For those of you who have played my Tribal War - Florida map, you may have noticed a small swamp scene featuring two palm trees in the lower left corner.
Image
I'm sure you have never noticed them, as they were designed to blend into the background and look like just another stain, but to me they have a larger meaning.

Growing up in Florida the Palm Trees were a big symbol of calm and relaxation, and family. We had them in our backyard, and could pretty much see them wherever you went. Here in Georgia we don't have too many of them, and usually I only see them when I go home. So to me the Palm Trees on the map represent a little bit of home. A way to bring the lines of the map to a more personal place. Originally they were intended to be kept secret until the end of time, but I hope you are all enjoying this little glimpse into the minds of Conquer Club's Cartographers that we call Hidden Symbols.

Map Name: Small World
Mapmaker(s): MrBenn
Number of Territories: 34
What Makes This Map Worthy of Being Made: Ever since the original Classic Map was taken away from us, I have wanted to put Kamchatka back on the map. I have therefore set myself a challenge to create a micro-map that shall be the antithesis of SuperSize.. a map of the world that pits within a mere 400 pixels wide that will make it easier for people to play conquer club whilst on devices such as PDAs and mobile phones.

how can I have 19 points when I had 8 in first round ? I got 11 points in round 2? Either you gave me some points more in round 1 or you miscalculated something.
