So I have 2 games going on 13988978 and 13999045 where one individual took off quick and was pulling down twice the number of bonus troops as the second most person which was me. In both maps I tried to break bonuses in gm 978 I failed and gm 045 succeeded but didn't hold. In both cases nobody else helped out and now I am #3 in both and sure to lose. Was I wrong to try to slow the leader down or should I just not attacked and hoped for the best?

If it doesn't benefit you, don't do it. if you can afford the resources, go ahead.
When I know somebody is bigger than all the rest, I will assume it the next #2 guy to do the dirty work.
Usually not a good idea to assault a player just because he is bigger than the rest. Best to wait and see.
Once he gets too big others will join in. If you go it alone (for no other reason than him being the biggest on the board) he will target you (his biggest threat)...and the others might simply wait till he wares himself (and you) down before they decide to engage.
