That is a whole different story, infighting in the UDA (loyalist paramilitaries).
Interesting fact
#2. Maddog Adair now lives in my country (Scotland), and Lives only 6 miles from my home town....it was kind of a big deal when he ran out (obviously with the BBC coverage, and the warfare and killing type goings on)

mad dog is a proddy. as a british protestant myself, i find this highly offensive talking about a known international terrorist group that has killed many a innocent people. i am not saying the loyalist parlamilitaries has not committed attrocities, far from it. but with peace at last in Northern Ireland we don`t ne this shit brought up by some retarded americans.
a hell off a lot of the problems were invested by the same kind of ignorant americans that made this fucking thread. if there was a thread glamourising al queda the mods would wipe it out straight away.
the ira are a bunch of wankers that blew up manchester, enneskillen, london, birmingham and many more places around britain.
oh and btw, don`t be bringing up bloody sunday in defence of these cowards who hide behind the innocent.
I suppose there's nothing wrong with that, as long as you realise it's just a bit of yarn spinning and don't think you're learning anything about the IRA by reading Jack Higgins.
As far as "Any one is fine there all ira and do basically the same stuff" - you want to try telling them that!
lord twiggy1 wrote:okay, well back on topic, sort of, has anyone read any Jack Higgins books?

Spot on.
I know you're American, but PLEASE don't start idolising or glorifying the IRA because they seem somehow romantic freedom-fighter type figures.
They are terrorists, murderers and criminals. That is not amusing or cool. The IRA was a paramilitary organisation with the blood of possibly thousands of innocent people on their hands. One of my fathers best friends moved to Ireland and was killed by an IRA bomb.
The troubles in Northern Ireland are a tragedy, and there have been atrocities on all sides, but all I can say is that I am glad that those days are (touch wood) behind us:

^Entirely agreed. The IRA was the worst thing that ever happened N.I. and many of us have endured some injustice because of them. My grandad was in fact hit by a car-bomb. The point is that they are all cowards - they hardly ever targeted any political leaders - it was always innocent people who wanted nothing to do with the troubles. (To be fair, the Protestant paramilitary groups are/were no better).
So, to all Americans who thought the IRA were glorious freedom fighters GFY! Ignorance is a terrible thing.

I'm not disagreeing with anyone who posted after Kahless, but I just assumed this was an in-joke I didn't understand, what with Adair & Spence being loyalists.
Kahless' profile says he's from RoI.
EDIT: Unless Guis and Robin are talking about the original poster. I'm really confused now.

I don't subscribe to that theory; but do I assume that non-Americans who do don't have to f*** themselves?
Just a thought given it seems most Euros look for opportunities to bash America/Americans, even when the topic is not about them.
Things that make you go......
Slightly off topic...It's Election time here in the ol RoI. We have the right to vote for whichever crook we want to hold the country purse for the next 5 years (or at least i would get the vote if i was on the register).

I forgot about that. Will Bertie get a third term?

I think it was in response to the original post by an American, and it is a reference to the fact that there is something of a trend for Irish-Americans, or just those who somehow believe they have Irish roots, to somehow glorify the actions of the IRA... Popular fiction being a major example. Don't forget that for much of the troubles a really pretty huge chunk of IRA and other para-military funding came from Irish-American communities and leaders. Private American citizens (not the government) have done a lot to help the IRA in their time, and it is a connection not really felt in other countries.
And anyone who glorifies terrorism can GFY in my opinion.

I agree.
There has been some glorification (mostly hollywood, go figure ) of the IRA in the U.S., but I believe it was more on the principle of seceding from G.B. more than anything else. Even given that, I can't think of any examples that glorify the terrorist tactics the IRA used.
Yes, this thread was started by an apparent American, but I believe he was just asking if anyone knew anything about the IRA, not condoning any of the terrorism the IRA committed.

Also exactly what I meant - Irish-Americans used to fund the IRA without really knowing the terrible things they were doing. I wasn't having a dig at Americans (as much as I enjoy it) because I actually had fact behind it

Reminds me of the controversy-that-wasn't about MacDonalds (the "restaurant" chain) funding the IRA. A quick check on Google, and it seems a lot of people still believe it.
Allright, this post isnt meant to be pro-IRA but they actually do have a cause to be doing this. its called British Imperialism. you brits who are saying that they are cowards are the ones who oppresed Ireland for so long. In that rule your people killed, raped inocent people and did many other things to piss the Irish off and the IRA was what came of it. so maybe you guys are the cowards.
and just a note. i wasnt being pro-IRA in creating this thread. i just, like Iz said, trying to learn more about them. maybe you should read the firs page or two before you go around making idiotic assumptions.
