So your saying that obedience is essential to the point of life? -personally I believe that no man(or women) can tell another what to do, its immoral and leads to people interfering with others interests.
As for Competition vs. Cooperation, - I dont think that this has anything to do with the point of life itself, however it is a good arguement, Im on the side of Socialism (thats Cooperation)
The reason we live in a competitive society(a dog eat dog world) is because that in essence it is the definition of Capitalism, and we are taught to accept it, and to live by it. (personally I see this as one of the many flaws of our world today)
Its somewhat similar to religions teaching intolerance of other religions in order to gain its global supremacy(sometimes on "moral" grounds) there by destroying the message of the original teacher. I see both these issues as very much connected and a clear explanation of why the world is in the state that it is in today. Competition.
AS for the meaning of life, for everyone is different so is the purpose of life. To each their own. Personally I feel it important to find ourselves in order to better understand our individuality, and our own personal desires. Then we can truly discern what it is that makes us happy, and have the courage to pursue it, despite others opinions, nor competition.
Personally for me the point of life is knowledge, enlightenment, nirvana, rapture and euphoria. I long for the Union, even if that means something completely different to me then it does to you... 69

You sir, are very right also. From a very early age we are taught to respect the laws and folow rules, and while these are all good guidleines, why should we? You should live life to its fullest, no matter the rules.

in a way, yes, but really no. Just to be happy and be good. (why I said that was just like not to be evil or such.)

If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?

Given that I don't believe in a 'God'; then we must all be our own masters, and as such the only point we can possibly have is to fulfill as many of our desires as possible. I'm kinda tired, so that's a bit simplistic, but I guess it'll get expanded as we go on. I just wanted to kick off this rather interesting thread with a talking point.
although I am religious, I also believe the point of life is happiness. Because "doing good deeds" or whatever christians call it, that is their point of life I think...either that or the 10 commandments...
anyway they believe that stuff will get you into heaven. But I believe doing that stuff will get you into heaven AND make you happy, thus the REAL point of life, IMO is happiness.
Actually, rejecting ones sin nature or "getting saved" and seeking only God is what gets us to heaven. Good works prior to faith is how the Catholics do it (and why it so guilt-trippy). But the point is, the whole Idea of any way of life is, yes, to enjoy what you have and to a point, want more. As a christian, that means more of God in my life. Having wealth and the love of a wife wouldn't hurt either, so long as it doesn't interfere with my walk on the narrow path (Matthew 6, I think).

42...42 the number 42 (this is what my very geeky friends told me) if you think i am crazy, 42
I would like to correct you on this. 42 is the answer to life the universe and everything. Saying 42 is the answer to life is like saying 4+2+1=4
I have an IQ of 195. Of course my answers are different!

The point of life is to reject part of what makes you who you are. That's a recipe for fulfillment right there.
the point is easy.. to live long & prosper. to be good to others even though some may not be good to you. to give of yourself with joy being its' own reward. and to never judge others as you would wish to be judged.
i think the point is to be happy with yourself even when times are bad or dismal. to enjoy life to its' fullest and have fun. to stop & smell the roses & lay back and look @ the sky and see all it's beauty and look at the stars at night and see the wonders of the world and how infinite it is.
how when you look at the stars you can see how small a persons problems really are and anything is possible.. to never give up.
to fight til you can't anymore. to seek help when you know you can't go any farther.
to know & really really believe that LIFE IS GOOD.
to also know that LIFE CAN SUCK and know that thinks will always get better.
this is my philosphy. just my 2 cents.
i come from the school of very hard knocks and, if i can feel this way anyone can
It is wrong to say that our purpose is to propogate the species, pass on our genes etc. These are the reasons why we exist and continue to exist - they are not our purpose.
For example - Let's take a car, the point of this car is not that it gets built, rather it's purpose depends on it's owner. For one person the purpose of our car is for transport to and from work, the shops etc. The next owner may use the car to take part in illegal street races, it's purpose is for street racing. Let's say this person is run off the road and is killed, the accident investigators take ownership of the car and it's new purpose is to be evidence.
My conclusion is that the point of anything is subjective, it is what you decide. It is what you apply to it. So the point of life is whatever you make it.
My suggestion is to enjoy every minute and aim for fulfilment.
