Andy and Gilligan....firstly Andy thanks for Final Forge on this map.
To the name....there was a lot of debate here in australia, and it still runs in the papers from time to time, as to whether the Japanese wanted to invade and capture australia. They were a nation without many resources and their military i believe saw australia as the perfect target to overcome this obstacle. Many people believe they sought to invade Australia, and evidence points to this from the fact that Darwin, Cairns, Mossman, Townsville, Wyndham, Broome were bombed, and several scouting missions by plane were initiatied over Townsville and far north queensland. There was never any invasion of the australian mainland, and most of the fighting campaigns took place in PNG and other Pacific Islands. But there is still beleif and this discussion is refered to that this period in 1942 was THE BATTLE FOR AUSTRALIA.
It is long-winded but that is the historical basis of this map. The WWII can probably be discarded, although that points to this particular time in history.
Also I must add that there were two submarine scouts sent into Sydney Harbour, and a couple along the southern Western Australian coast down as as far Fremantle.
