It's entirely possible to sign up to a tournament and be waiting for a while before it starts. By then, the player might even have forgotten what it was about, especially if they sign up to a lot of those things.
For normal invitations, such as inviting a couple of friends to a game, you're going to message them anyway. It's not that big of a deal to communicate with them. You can already send one mail to all at the same time.
I don't like the idea of someone mailing me at random to join their point farming games, so I don't think it should be available to everyone.
Why implement something in one aspect of the site but not the other? If it seems like a helpful tool tournament and clan games, dont you think it would be helpful for the average user on CC?
Of course you could invite somebody and then go PM them or write on their wall, but the point is to streamline that communication in one step as opposed to taking a second or third. I personally am throwing out hundreds of invites each month to players for several different reasons, mostly to fill the pantry. I often get PM's back asking me why I invited them to games that I am not joining, which turns into 2-3 PM's or wall posts. When it could be easier just to say "I invited you to this game because you are waiting to play another just like it, this one will fill faster".
The intention is not to have a PM automatically sent with the invite, but to have the message appear with the invitation to the game. Much like where the title of a tournament or clan game would be.
