Of course this misrepresents the law. It should also be noted that the BBC was pulled from the air in Russia only after the UK government first pulled Russian broadcasters from the UK.Doc_Brown wrote:Meanwhile, the Russian government makes it punishable by up to 15 years in prison to publish any information about the Ukraine war (including calling it a war or an invasion) that deviates from the official position of the Russian government:

So in the west, you lose your job. In Russia, you get sent to rot in a Siberian gulag for 15 years. If the US had passed these kinds of laws in the last two years, several of us would be sitting in jail cells due to having different opinions from those espoused by Dr. Fauci on the proper way to deal with Covid.

I don't think it needs a defense. If you're going to punish an aggressor nation by boycotting its exports, that includes athletic and artistic exports.bigtoughralf wrote:Leaving aside that football teams didn't really have foreign players back then, is 'they did it back then too' a defense or something?Dukasaur wrote:How many German athletes played for Liverpool in 1940?bigtoughralf wrote:The general point still stands that Russian athletes, sports teams, performers, cats etc. are all still being banned from doing their jobs on the basis of their nationality.

Well if that's your attitude then no doubt you're also pleased to see US sanctions on countries like North Korea and Iran cause crippling food and medicine shortages for tens of millions of regular people who bear no responsibility for their government's actions. And presumably you would also like to see the US and UK banned from all international sports competitions, banking systems and from exporting any consumer goods in response to their ongoing sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Israel.Dukasaur wrote:If you're going to punish an aggressor nation by boycotting its exports, that includes athletic and artistic exports.bigtoughralf wrote:The general point still stands that Russian athletes, sports teams, performers, cats etc. are all still being banned from doing their jobs on the basis of their nationality.
Well, to be fair, we already crossed that bridge with Libya. In 2003 the U.S. gave security assurances to Libya it would not be attacked if it terminated its nuclear research program. In 2011, the U.S. attacked Libya.DoomYoshi wrote: First) Ukraine gave up nukes in a deal with Russia that it's borders would remain inviolable. Good points, DY. I think the two points are linked in an important way.DoomYoshi wrote:Despite the temporary unification caused by a common enemy, I foresee the world order being shaken up drastically by this invasion for a couple reasons.
First) Ukraine gave up nukes in a deal with Russia that it's borders would remain inviolable. This is two incursions within 5 years which makes it unlikely that any other nation will ever give up on a nuclear arsenal. Pretty soon we are going to see many more countries seeking to stockpile their own nuclear arsenal.
Second) The Russian economy only survived the breakup of the Soviet Union because of support by Western nations and their capital. After that, the Russian economy tanked twice more and each time was rescued by Canadian taxpayers. I perceive that Western nations will be less forgiving this time around. China alone might be able to help support the Russians after this failed experiment, but that is still a significant departure from the previous world order.

Serbia and Russia have been linked (ethnically) and historically for quite a while. Study the start of WWI in the Balkans.saxitoxin wrote:Well, to be fair, we already crossed that bridge with Libya. Big Anti-Nazi, Pro-Russia demonstration in Serbia today! Qwert - were you there?

Wow: the Russians are showing "restraint" by not killing civilians. RIGHT. This is simply more LIES by saxi.saxitoxin wrote:THE key difference between this war and the Serbia genocide is that the Russians are taking casualties in order to avoid hitting civilianS targets. They could easily carpet bomb Ukraine into dust and then occupy what's left. NATO showed no such restraint in Serbia, hitting all sorts of civilian infrastructure.

It was there to illustrate the point. Which is the purpose of analogies.bigtoughralf wrote:Okay so given your WW2 analogy was apparently completed irrelevant:Dukasaur wrote:I don't think it needs a defense.bigtoughralf wrote:Leaving aside that football teams didn't really have foreign players back then, is 'they did it back then too' a defense or something?Dukasaur wrote:How many German athletes played for Liverpool in 1940?bigtoughralf wrote:The general point still stands that Russian athletes, sports teams, performers, cats etc. are all still being banned from doing their jobs on the basis of their nationality.

Agreed. There are third and deeper lesson which probably will pass by unnoticed.DoomYoshi wrote:Despite the temporary unification caused by a common enemy, I foresee the world order being shaken up drastically by this invasion for a couple reasons.

By giving examples of another couple of xenophobic boycotts (refuse to employ foreign nationals) that I don't agree with, at least one of which didn't happen anyway?Dukasaur wrote:It was there to illustrate the point. Russia and many of the other countries in the former USSR were recipients of foreign aid from Canada. Honestly, that was a bit of hyperbole on my part since it was not the main reason the Russian economy survived. Rather, it was because of Western banks lending to the Russian government to get it through the tough times.jusplay4fun wrote:Honestly, I was not aware of the monetary assistance to Russia by Canada. Despite the problems caused by Pukin' Putin, I would not want the alternative of their nuclear arsenal falling into the hands of rogue leaders. I recall discussions about that very point when USSR and then the Russian Empire was breaking up and undergoing lots of change, in the 1990s, as I recall.DoomYoshi wrote:Despite the temporary unification caused by a common enemy, I foresee the world order being shaken up drastically by this invasion for a couple reasons.

This isn't actually true. There are many reports that Qaddafi and other officials wanted such a security blanket, but it was never promised by the US or UK. Instead, the agreement was for an end to sanctions. While not many documents are available, the only documents that are available indicated ending of sanctions, with no mention of security guarantee.saxitoxin wrote:Well, to be fair, we already crossed that bridge with Libya. It's also somewhat interesting that Putin has never publicly acknowledged having any children, yet it's 100% confirmed he has two daughters neither of who lives in Russia (one was born in russia, the other i think was Germany), both now live in the Netherlands. There are also unconfirmed reports he has a third daughter, and other unconfirmed reports he has a son (though this seems unlikely as he would probably acknowledge existence of a male child.)ConfederateSS wrote:------------------O.K...there is some mysterious stuff going down...You can't believe anything that officially goes with who is Putin....
